Nvidia driver question glitching

Post by Kontigo »

Hello..just a quick queztion regarding drivers.

I am having a little bit of glitching (horizontal lines) when cursor hovers over scroll bar. Just in brave browser, not firefox. Anyway, someone suggested it may be a driver issue. I am currently running nvidia driver 470 (version 470.63.01-0ubuntu0.20.04.2). When going to driver manager i have 2 other options....xserver-xorg-videi-nouveau and also n vidia driver 460. Am i ssfe to switch to one of these to see if that is, indeed, the priblem?? Running mint 20 edge uma. Old laptop with mint 19 had no such issues and was using nvidia 360 Tganks for any help

We really need to see how Mint views your hardware. Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

I merged your two topics as they seem to be about the same issue.

Usually, if there is a problem with the driver, it will show up on all apps and not just certain ones. There may be something different about how brave browser uses hardware acceleration or other options. You might want to check the available settings.

Additionally, we should check to make sure all your inxi output looks appropriate, so please supply that data.

I do not see anything in the data which is unusual or suggesting a problem.

I do not use Brave, but I found this for turning off hardware acceleration. In other browsers, doing that helps many issues.

Brave settings>System>Use hardware acceleration when available (Set it to OFF)

Thanks again for yr reply...i think i have tried thst one as regards to hardware turned off...but i will check when home and see if i have/and or it works. I will also try hooking laptop up to my tv screen to see if the lines appear there too...if not, then it could suggest that thr issue lies with the laptop screen....as initially mentioned, its a new laptop..perhaps faulty?? Anyway, i will keetp u posted and sincerly appreviate u taking the time to investigate it😀

Hello again..sorry for delay in rrplying...had to get myself a HGMI cable...so hooked laptop up to tv screen.....still get the glitching on the laptop, but it dies not appear on tv screen...would this suggest that it is my laptop screen that has the issue?

Thanks😀

Quick update...interestingly, just found out...it only seems to glitch on full screen mode...when i reduced screen size (the icon between minimize and maximise, it doesnt happen).....so my temporary fix is to maximise the half screen mode (if that what u call it?)..so it appears a full screen mode and live with that...as always, any tjoughts appreciated..thanks

Usually, laptop screens are DP connections which means it is slightly different than the HDMI connection you have for the television. It is possible there is a difference in how the graphics driver makes the two different connections.

My guess is there is something in Brave's code in that section of the display which may not be using the graphics driver properly for that section of the display. However, the issue may also somehow be related to the specific Nvidia driver in use, so it may be possible a future driver patch might clear this issue.

Glad you have found a workaround. I do not have any other ideas, but maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Hello smg..sorry to bother u...i know one isnt supposed to wander off topic, but this may be related....just to remind you...i was initially having problems loading up my linux mint 20 edge uma on my new laptop ..had codec 110 probs i think and couldnt get through to desktop.and u gave me some hints...then i had some issues with cursor over scroll bar causing horizontal lines on brave browser again which u were nice enoigh to give yr advice...anyway, thought i would just ask as the two issues may b related?...i notice that when i turn on the laptop, before it comes through to desktop...thete are a couple of lines that momentarily flash up....i am not quick enough to read all tbe words but today i caught a couple and it says "firmware bug" ...is there anyway i can pause or see what this might be? After it fladses up a couple times, it goes through yo desktop ok and i can use the computer ok bit i thoight that the glitching may be related...all updates are up to date...anyway, as said, hope i am not bothering you and if you have any ideas or can point me in the right direction that would be great.thanks 😀

My guess is that firmware bugs would be related to your computer's BIOS/UEFI and how well it aligned with the specs for writing firmware. The Linux kernel looks for and expects certain info to be in specific places, but that does not always happen. When it sees a miss-match, it will print a line. Usually, these are not problems of which you can either do much about, or are even problems you will notice when running Mint.

You can run the following search to check for "firmware" messages that came up on the screen during the current boot cycle.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i 'firmware'
