2560x1440 60Hz not working

Post by q1980 »

Hi,
I saw similar issues on this forum and tried but nothing working in my case.

I have connected 2560x1440x60 capable monitor via hdmi to laptop dell 5511 with intel graphics, but after choosing this resolution in 'display dialog' monitor's displaying 'loosing signal message', but system thinks the desktop is displayed because I can move cursor on this monitor, however screen is empty.

Lower resolutions works for eg. 2048x1280 (what is weird I don't see this mode in supported modes :))

Are you saying that setting the mode with xrandr manually does not work?

Yes,
What is more I'm pretty sure this monitor worked with other dell laptop out-of-the-box (some older model, with linux mint 19 also with this hdmi, but unfortunately I can't check this because I don't have this laptop and I don't what mode was used, but resolution was correct there).

I can't see anything wrong with your xrandr commands, post the output from xrandr with the monitor connected - to confirm that it is DP-3.

I'm stumped, you've done all the right things, the monitor is on DP-3 and is showing 2560x1440 resolution in the xrandr output :( .

The only other thing I can suggest is check the specs for the laptop - what is the max resolution supported via displayport? Don't think this will help, my venerable thinkpad T430s can handle 2560x1600 via DP.

Are you connecting via a usb C port, can you connect via the mini displayport or HDMI port?

Dell has hdmi 2.0 what I use (and it's quite new model). Also monitor looks ok, because I connected to this device xbox (few months ago) and this resolution worked nicely on this cable.

I don't have usbc<>displayport cable to check this kind connnection (I have minidisplay<>displayport cable, but this is not compatible with usbc).

The Intel i915 graphics driver loads from the kernel. Your info indicates you are using the 5.4 kernel on a 10th-gen Intel cpu. I suggest trying a newer kernel which would have an updated i915 driver.

The 5.11 kernel is available in Update Manager. Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Let us know if that helps.

I tried 5.11 few days ago, but maybe they updated something. I see there's also update for 5.4. I will try.

How to easily switch back to 5.4 after upgrade?
On booting on grub I chose last time the older kernel and later went to settings as you described and removed newer kernel - is other simpler better method?

That is the correct way to switch back.

Mint will automatically boot to the highest number kernel, so if the highest number is not the one you want to use, you would follow the instructions you have to boot to the lower number (older) kernel.

If the kernel does not help, the only other place I can think to check of what might be happening is the Xorg log output. Sometimes messages (which would not necessarily show as errors) would be in that file.

Use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin if you would like us to check it.
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you should post in your next reply.

Re: 2560x1440 60Hz not working

Post by pns »

I had a similar problem with my XPS 7590. Display port (via TB) works fine but HDMI is very finicky. I was able once or twice to get it to display but more often than not I either get incorrect resolutions (usually fixed by deleting ~/.config/cinnamon-monitors.xml) or the monitor alternates between completely black and saying no signal (even though from xrandr's perspective the monitor is active and connected).

1920x1080 always works via HDMI. But 2560x1440p@60 I only got it to work once or twice but 99% of the time it doesn't work.

In the end the only way I was able to get it to work with HDMI for 2560x1440p reliably was to lower the refresh rate using the following:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode 2560x1440_56 225.585 2560 2608 2640 2720 1440 1443 1448 1481 +hsync -vsync
xrandr --addmode DP-3 2560x1440_56
xrandr --output DP-3 --mode 2560x1440_56 --pos 0x0
which results in a 56Hz refresh rate. Any higher than that doesn't work.

If you can, try with DVI, for me it works fine in 1920x1080 and not if I use HDMI

I am no expert, but could it be a so-so HDMI cable causing the issue for you? ; because it's odd lowering it 4Hz (from 60Hz to 56Hz) actually fixed it.

because from what I can tell 1440p should work at 60Hz I would imagine since it appears one site I was reading a moment ago (i.e. https://viotek.com/wp-content/uploads/H ... 24x536.png ) claims...

-HDMI v1.4 cable... 1440p @ 85Hz MAX
-HDMI v2.0 cable... 1440p @ 144Hz MAX

so your still a bit within the safety margin at 60Hz assuming you got a lower rated HDMI cable. but at the same time I am not sure how picky HDMI cables are in regards to all of this 'higher performance' stuff, if it's mostly just marketing junk, or if it's quite accurate(?). so 'maybe' your HDMI cable just happens to be a 'little' worse than usual and could account for you needing to lower Hz to make it work reliably(?). but I am just taking a guess here as it would be interesting to see what happens if you use a different HDMI cable on your same setup just to see if 1440p @ 60Hz works.

p.s. still, thanks for the info as that could be potentially beneficial for others.

Unless someone has a older monitor I suspect DVI might not be a real option.

on a side note... I was briefly using a DVI to HDMI adapter (i.e. this one... https://www.officedepot.com/a/products/ ... ter-Black/ ) so that the adapter was plugged into my GPU's DVI port which then converted it to HDMI and then I just used a old 6' Belkin HDMI cable I had laying around for quite a few years now to connect from the GPU to Monitor's HDMI port and, at least on Mint, I could partially get 144Hz to work but had a issue (it seems to work when I set it to 144Hz but after computer sits overnight with monitor off etc, then I power on screen to use it again, the only way to re-engage the screen is for me to press CTRL+ALT+F2, which then engages the screen but I am at a prompt, and then press CTRL+ALT+F7, which brings me back to the normal Mint screen and it's working again like usual. but I gotta do this each day at 144Hz (as I leave my PC on all of the time)), where as when I dropped back to 120Hz it worked as expected without the issue as I no longer have to do that CTRL+ALT+F2 and CTRL+ALT+F7 stuff. but I switched to DisplayPort cable (supposedly they are DP v1.4 cables (my monitor itself is only DP v1.2 spec anyways) as I got two dirt cheap on Ebay and work fine at 1080p @ 144Hz (they might work on higher res/Hz but I have nothing to test them on to say for sure) and I can use 144Hz without issue now.

but looking around online it appears dual-link DVI can do a MAX of 1080p @ 120/144Hz, which seems to be the MAX for the DVI spec (assuming the best one). single-link DVI seems to be 1080p @ 60Hz MAX.

You had a issue that it (CTRL+ALT+F2 and then CTRL+ALT+F7) helped temporarily fix too?

No, because when it happened, I had not the TV on ... I rarely use the TV anyway and anyway the black screens don't last long enough to use these keyboard shortcuts ... and now it seems to have stop to happen, especially with my new cable

I'm pretty sure it's not the HDMI cable, I have a cable I use for my TV (2560p @ 60Hz) and it makes no difference. Same thing happens. As you mentioned any 1.4/2.0 cable is able to easily do 1440p@60Hz. I have tried connecting the laptop to the TV to test it and it works fine (so laptop can definitely drive 1440p@60Hz via HDMI). DisplayPort also works fine with the monitor at 1440p@60Hz.

It all points to being an issue with the monitor itself, specifically with it's HDMI input. Even though the specs say the HDMI port supports 1440p@60Hz ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway just wanted to put out a possible solution that worked in my case.
