MSI Laptop not detecting external hdmi screen

Post by NotATinkerer »

Hi there!

As the title suggests, I am having problems using a second screen with my MSI laptop. I'm new to Unix/Linux,
I have a dual boot of Windows 10 and Linux Mint. Everything works fine in Windows, but I already tried all solutions I could find online to make the second monitor work in Linux Mint with no success.

This is the output from

Most laptops have a Function combo to press for switching to the input to external monitor.

Nothing happens when I press it. :?

Edit for clarification: The function combinations don't work (didn't need to use them until trying to), so pressing the buttons for switching input doesn't work.

What model is your laptop? I will research it to see if others had this issue.

Device-2: NVIDIA GP106M [GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile] driver: N/A
That could be your problem, no driver loaded for your nvidia graphics. It could be that your external graphics ports are only via nvidia.
Goto admin > driver manager and enable the driver for nvidia.

You have a dual-graphics laptop. In many dual-graphics laptops the Nvidia GPU drives the external ports as AndyMH has mentioned.

Your output currently shows no Nvidia driver and shows you rendering with Intel. It is normal to see N/A when running in Intel Power-Save mode. Preventing the Nvidia driver from loading helps prolong battery life.
Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 530 driver: i915 v: kernel
Device-2: NVIDIA GP106M [GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile] driver: N/A
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: modesetting
unloaded: fbdev,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz

If you have the Nvidia drivers installed (using Driver Manager) and enrolled the MOK for Secure Boot (assuming you have Secure Boot enabled), then probably all you have to do is switch to On-Demand mode.

The nvidia-prime-applet should have installed on your computer and will currently be an Intel icon in the lower right of your screen in the panel. Click on it and switch to On-Demand mode and then reboot your computer. Let us know if that puts an image on your external screen.

I will also let you know, you are probably going to run into performance issues with a root partition this full. Ideally, you want that under 75% and lower is better. Here are some tips How to Clean Linux Mint Safely, but I think the issue is your root partition is too small for what you have installed.

I also noticed that, but I do have nvidia-driver-470 enabled. I have also tried the other options with no success.

I appreciate your detailed answer but unfortunately, that didn't work.
Thank you for the info regarding the partition size!

Please provide the output of mokutil --sb-state and dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia and enclose the results within code tags. We can check to see if it looks like all Nvidia driver packages did install.

I was not expecting that. That is usually the response when a system is using Legacy BIOS, but your output below indicates your system has UEFI. :?
Machine:
Type: Laptop System: Micro-Star product: GE62VR 6RF v: REV:1.0
serial: <filter>
Mobo: Micro-Star model: MS-16JB v: REV:1.0 serial: <filter>
UEFI: American Megatrends v: E16JBIMS.110 date: 01/16/2018

The nvidia output looks like all the correct files are there. What is your system's current inxi -Gx?

Also, what is the output of xrandr --verbose with the monitor attached?

Re: MSI Laptop not detecting external hdmi screen

Was that the entire output for xrandr --verbose? It only lists one possible connection which is the eDP-1 connection of your laptop screen. Even if your external monitor is not being picked up, the fact your computer has other possibilities for screens should have shown up in that output.
