trying to get amdgpu working... vulkan errors

Post by sadman »

Installed rx6600xt GPU in my old dell Optiplex. I had some trouble installing the drivers. Ended up installing amdgpu and it seems to work for somethings, but not others.

SYMPTONS:
works: desktop graphics seem ok, warzone runs, crypto mining.
doesn't work: some wine games! <---- might be fair to call this a major tragedy.
kinda works: blender detects it, but crashes when it tries to use it.

Gothic Armada(ue4 game) complains that DX11 is not level 10 and that radv is not a conformant vulkan implementation, openvr could not do a bunch of stuff. dxvk cannot find any adapters and some other stuff. I think this is a wine and vulkan problem...

Blender says "split kernel error: failed to loan kernel_path_init

INFO:
if I watch -n 2 sensors, the video card is there. so I think the driver is installed
glxgears runs which used to mean opencl is working.
clinfo seems ok.... but I don't know. at least it's not full of errors.
if I run vulkaninfo it lists a bunch of errors with the famous "radv is not a conformant vulkan implementation, testing use only." included so I think vulkan is broken...

PLEAD FOR HELP:
just how does this graphics stack work anyway and how to fix it? I'm working under the assumption that the user software(in this case gothic armada or blender talks to opencl, which is interpreted by vulkan, which talks to amdgpu which talks to the card. In my case vulkan is broken. In other words, please help me fix vulkan or properly diagnose the issue.

Much appreciation in advance!

1. We need to know what's under the hood
Please post the results of inxi -Fxxxrz . This will tell us how your distro sees the hardware drivers and all ( this was mentioned in step 5 of How to Get help .... Pink background color and font above the " trying to get amdgpu working... vulkan error " first message for help you began. the " this ' link

2. Unless you're trying to take advantage of something beyond gaming performance .., such as OPENCL involving rendering for content creation work, there is really never or VERY rarely a need to and sometimes not recommend to install the amd driver per the amd.com's linux driver install instructions?

Why? It is because 99% of the time the best driver is already built into the kernel. BUT until we know the inxi-Fxxxrz results, anything I say tying into that is really only speculation and guessing.

Given how young that gpu/video card is ( newer than mine. rx 580 here) I'm thinking kernel 5.11.something-something will be your best bet.

3. Lets assume that my number 2 post isn't applicable as the cause of the problem.... Did you install the 683MB Downloaded version 21.30 found here when selected ubuntu 20.04 x86-64 >>> https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... rx-6600-xt ?

4.
Blender says "split kernel error: failed to loan kernel_path_init
per a user named slobeck here >>> https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxquestions ... mentation/.... i wonder if this is applicable ----
A little about radv: AMD has it's own "official" Vulkan driver called "amdvlk." You can try that. It's compliant but from what I read about it on Phoronix, it's not as good as radv measured in frame-rates on certain games. Neither one implements all the extensions but "compliance" isn't about those it's about Vulkan its self. radv is one of the only ones that IS fully compliant. BTW Mesa is the one who provides the tests and certifies whether a driver is compliant. It's a very expensive process for commercial users but I think they open-sourced the conformance tests a few years ago which used to cost upwards of $10k to have access to.

#2 Actually, I am looking for gaming performance, but more importantly, I would like to get blender to work with it. I'm still on blender 2.79... I'll try kernel 5.1 after I post this. Do you think it's really a kernel problem? I wonder if I have two drivers installed and it's only using one???

#3 yes, I did indeed download and install the 683MB 21.30-1290604-ubuntu-20.04
I started out in Mint 17 or something... I installed amdgpu and amdgpu-pro, neither of which worked. I upgraded a couple times and installed some new kernels, but couldn't get it to work. So I did a clean uma install. I didn't know the driver was in there so I installed amdgpu anyway and after some fussing, I find myself in this situation where it kinda works, but not totally. Again, I'm starting to wonder if there are two drivers installed...

#4 well it sounds like radv is the way to go... but a few frames per second is a small sacrifice to get blender to work. I'm upgrading from a geforce gt520 so I can't really loose in the performance department as long as it works. Perhaps this radv business should be a separate topic...

#2 update. I tried to install kernel 5.11.0.36 via update manager, but had a hard crash(no mouse) about halfway through bargraph. I turned off machine and when rebooted it came back as kernel 5.4.0...

The 5.4 kernel might be a better match for a 4th-gen Intel cpu.

It appears the AMD driver from the website is installed. I think that may also have installed the firmware needed for that GPU, but I am not positive.

I found quite a few people with AMD cards (even on Windows) running into this message. You might want to try the Blender site for help. Maybe a different Blender version will give different results?

My 4790k with z97m pro4 micro atx motherboard backup desktop build has no problem with any of the 5.11 kernels ( as well as used 5.8 kernels and most of the 5.4 kernels without problem also). *shrugs*

Regardless I'm definitely not arguing your point though. Older hardware, when in doubt, often still works better and more stable with older kernels.

Sorry the kernel idea was a dead end. Honestly, I'm out of anything close to being a good idea. Others like SMG will more likely succeed in leading you to a resolution on this.

Did you install this package: Radeon Software for Linux version 21.20 for Ubuntu 20.04.2

Post the output of these two commands:

some Kernel weirdness to report.
So if you recall, I tried to install kernel 5.11, computer crashed, rebooted into 5.4. So I was running 5.4
Well, a incremental kernel upgrade appeared in the package manager and I installed it. Expecting to boot with 5.4.x.x I ended up running 5.11. So I guess I'm now running 5.11.

here is another inxi -Fxxxrz to reflect any changes since the update.

I do not believe I installed Radeon Software for Linux 21.20, unless I did earlier and later removed and replaced with 21.30. If I did install and remove 21.20, I used the /usr/bin/amdgpu-uninstall to remove. I did install 21.30.

The output you got indicates the open-source amdgpu driver is loading, not AMDGPU-Pro. For the Pro driver, the output of the first command should be this:
Loading /opt/amdgpu-pro/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so

The output of the second command should be this:
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.

Post the output of this command to check if the required Dimgrey Cavefish firmware is installed:
ls -go /lib/firmware/amdgpu | grep dimgrey_cavefish

So, to be clear on the driver I installed. The amdgpu-pro-21.30-1290604-ubuntu-20.04 archive I downloaded from amd contains both a amdgpu-pro install and a amdgpu(without the pro) install. When I installed amdgpu-pro, I ended up with a black screen and had to terminal my was to /usr/bin/amdgpu-uninstall to get the desktop back. Not having luck with amdgpu-pro, I tried amdgpu which is in the same archive I downloaded from amd. So I am not surprised the pro driver is not loaded.

ls -go /lib/firmware/amdgpu | grep dimgrey_cavefish says

Try using this command to install only the Pro OpenCL component but not the Pro driver:
./amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=rocr,legacy --headless

Remove the existing installation first: amdgpu-uninstall

OK, in the past I have tried to install with ./amdgpu-pro-install --opencl=rocr,legacy without the headless part and it booted to a black screen. I didn't want to try headless because I thought I wouldn't be able to use a monitor. Anyway, I ran you command with sudo which avoids the black screen issue and the script installed and I noticed this error message float by as it installed:

Err:8 https://dll.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu focal InRelease
could not resolve 'dll.winehq.org'

I did a hard shutdown and booted into the desktop and the desktop seems accelerated and the exact same things work and do not work. perhaps this wine error is an issue? Perhaps the installer needs access to the wine repository and cannot gain access. I might have mucked it up trying to install different wine versions. thoughts?

That link doesn’t work. I assume that message was at the end of the installation when the initial ramdisk was being updated and is probably only related to your wine installation.

Are you now able to select the AMD GPU in Blender as a compute device? That seemed to be your main concern.

To get vulcan support, try these steps by thnx-1138:

SOLVED Re: trying to get amdgpu working... vulkan errors

Post by sadman »

OK, so I think this is SOLVED. At least as far as the vulkan errors. Since my last update, I found a updated blender update(thanks smg) that fixed some blender errors. Now it renders most stuff. Never got the gothic armada game to work, but it stopped complaining about vulkan and started complaining about dx11, which is wine's baby. I also ran glmark2 which rendered at 4100 fps(holy smokes!) so I guess it's working. While it only scores a 3234 on glmark2, which is less than the 16335 listed on the glmark2 web page for the card. I dunno much about glmark2, but 4100 fps is the most fps I've ever seen on my computer.

Thanks to everyone! I used everyone's advice and poof, like magic, no more vulkan errors. I upgraded the kernel as motoryzen suggested, updated blender as smg suggested and reinstalled amdgpu-pro as per roblm specifications(I added sudo). So great job Linux Mint Community!

Have you already tried via winecfg from terminal from within the main folder/directory of whatever you're needing to run in wine to add all dx-coherent .dll's? or winetricks?

Good to hear. Pease go to your very first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue and that there is a solution in the thread.
