[SOLVED] Monitor and acceleration issue

Post by Latr3nazza »

Hello,

I just install the latest cinnamon on a Dell Optiplex 7090 and had many issue from the start

First I fix with nomodest and then not sure what i've done with ethernet but seems is working now

But

I still have the pc running without hardware acceleration ( at least is what the driver window is telling every time I start the system)

and even worst is not recognising the second monitor ( which works fine on windows, so not problem from the hardware point of view for sure)

Please guide me I know I need you to post the specs and everything but I don't know the code

Thanks in advance for your help

Tony

Welcome to the forum, Tony.

By adding nomodeset you prevented the graphics drivers from loading. You will need to remove that in order to make it possible for the second monitor to work, and for the computer to be able to run with hardware acceleration.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware. Please let us know if you were using nomodeset when you ran this command.

Your system needs to be using a newer kernel than the 5.8 kernel in order for the proper graphics driver to install. Please upgrade to the 5.11 kernel.

Open Update Manager. Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear. Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

You should be able to remove nomodeset from grub and get graphics. If that does not work, then I will give you directions to try the 5.10-oem kernel.

Please go to your first post in this thread, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

If you remove the older ones, then you will stop getting messages to update them.

You can go into Update Manager like you did to upgrade the kernel, but this time click either the 5.8 or 5.4 on the left to see which kernels are listed as Installed in the middle column on the right. Then click the kernel number for the Installed kernel and a remove button will appear. Click Remove to delete all those kernel files. Once you no longer have any kernels of that particular number installed, then you will not get updates for it.

We usually advise to keep the kernel currently being used and one older kernel. Until you have two 5.11 kernels installed, you may want to keep one of the 5.8 kernels, but you can remove the rest.
