I do not recommend upgrading to the 5.11 kernel. That Nvidia-340 driver was last tested to work with the 5.4 kernel and you are likely to run into issues with it if you switch to the 5.11 kernel. Others who have moved to the 5.11 kernel have had to use a special custom version of the Nvidia-340 in order to get it to work properly.

The Nvidia-340 driver went end of life several years ago and you should stay with the 5.4 kernel when using it.

Have you tried using the recommended change in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration"). Let us know if the fix roblm recommends in the second post addresses the issue for you.

Use this command to open the modules file: xed admin:///etc/modules

Add this at the bottom:

nvidia
nvidia-drm
nvidia-modeset

Save and reboot

Are you still at the black screen? Can you get to a tty? (Ctl-Alt-F1)

If you only have Mint installed, then the system does not show the grub screen because that would just be an extra step in the process. There is a way to get it to show if you want to do that.

Because your system is UEFI, I would guess that if you press or repeatedly tap the Escape key during boot, the grub screen will come up.

Your system has dual graphics, Intel and Nvidia. Even if nvidia is not working, the Intel should work.

I am not sure what you mean by "trying to execute the open source driver". You should just need to remove the Nvidia driver.
apt remove nvidia-driver-340 then apt autoremove and reboot the computer.

The Intel driver is included in the Linux kernel and installs automatically when you boot the computer. There is nothing for you to install.

Then go to Advanced Options and select the kernel with (recovery mode) after it.
