S video to RCA adapter to RF modulator to TV, makes Linux mint 20.1 and 20.2 unstable

Post by Animal_Liberation »

The setup as stated is s -video adapter to RCA connector to RF modulator to TV. Is the instability due to my setup? I tried it on 20.1 and 20.2 Cinnamon, and also LMDB 20.2 and I get the same results. When the s-video is connected things slow way down until I am able to to and when I am finally able to click "mirror display" under "Display" but disconnecting has the system at a near standstill, sometimes freezing. Also the video does not fit the screen too well, leaves some space around all sides.

The question is, how to get this to fit the screen as good as possible and how to stop the near freeze. When screen mirroring box is checked, there are not resolutions that fit the monitor like 480i or 480p. How can this be fixed? It would be nice to have a screen adjustment like seen on video games and some tvs.

I think solving this has a lot of under appreciated value. Being able to use one tv for gaming and video is a real plus, it is a waste saving measure also.

I'm just not sure where to attack the problem. I guess I want a quick fix and also a fix for the problem at the linux level, or at least Debian.

I guess the first question I have ask is, what is doing the mode setting for video output connectors in LInux Mint 20.2, is it DRM-KSM? Is that where I have to change things in order to get the lower resolutions?
