Mint 20.02 Quadro K2100M Driver Problem

Post by slippyjoe »

Hi people,

after trying to install the right drivers and resetting with Timeshift many rounds, i gave up to search for solutions since it feels it is only getting worse and worse.

I own a HP Zbook G3 and this is equiped with a Dedicated NVIDIA GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M], by default it runs the Open Source Nouveau Driver (as shown in the driver Manager) alltough i doesnt start the graphics card i forg true, because the video performance is often catastrophic ( i am running Live Video Mixing Software).

I am on Linux Mint 20.02 64-bit and i additionally installed the KDE Plasma Desktop and the Ubuntu Studio Package this also installs the lowlatency kernels which I dont use.

Generally I experienced problems with random freezes of the GUI, but the mouse was still moveable. Then I found out, that when I boot another Kernel the Problem vanishes, so i downgraded the Kernel permanently to 5.4.0-74-generic.

When I am trying to install the Nvidia Drivers no matter if it is threw the Driver Manager I run into problems Cinnamon crashed(displayed message) and it didnt work; for example immediately after installing the 390 nvidia driver. Now I already have Plasma which doesnt display a message of crashing but just doesnt work, i cant login the login surface never appears when I log into the system with the terminal and then startx, it is frozen with moveable mouse.

I would really love to run that Graphics Card to unleash the full potential of this Mint Setup.

When i type inxi -Fxxxrz , it doesnt show a Graphics driver in use for the Nvidia Card alltough in the driver manager it is displayed as the Nouveau Driver running.

Welcome to the forum, slippyjoe.

Linux Mint has three supported desktops, Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. There is no support for KDE Plasma. Additionally, KDE Plasma has been known to cause problems, especially if installed on top of Cinnamon. If you really prefer to use it, we recommend using Kubuntu and not Mint.

If you took a Timeshift snapshot before installing KDE Plasma, I suggest reverting to the snapshot so we can get your Mint situation fixed. If you do not have a snapshot, you can try uninstalling it, but it is known for being easy to get all the bits and pieces removed. It might be easiest and fastest to just re-install Mint.

Your computer has both Intel and Nvidia graphics which means it has the capability to switch between the two. The settings for each will show up differently depending upon which graphics mode your computer is using. The settings below indicate your system is using the Intel graphics to render the display.

Graphics: Device-1: Intel 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
chip ID: 8086:0416
Device-2: NVIDIA GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M] vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A
bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:11fc
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: modesetting unloaded: fbdev,vesa
compositor: kwin_x11 resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4600 (HSW GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3
compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes

It is not in the mode to be able to use the Nvidia graphics which is why the N/A is listed. Intel is considered power-save mode and disabling the nvidia driver helps save power.

Actually i felt my question was bloated up already so much and i tried to keep it compact, so i didnt tell at first I had only Cinnamon installed and i tried to get working and it didnt work as well.

So my question is is it sure to NOT work with KDE, or may it work anyway with KDE? Because if there is a recipe for the install of the drivers i would really love to try it with the KDE environment, it just feels so much more stable for me.

Of course if you people say dont waste your time on trying this i wont. But since it didnt work with pure Cinnamon as well, my gut feeling kind of tells me the desktop environment isnt the primary cause of this.

What didn't work well? The graphics didn't work well? If the graphics are not set up properly then Cinnamon will crash. Cinnamon requires the graphics to be working properly.

There is more than one message which might display and you did not provide the message you received so all we can do is guess what happened.

Did you receive a message about having no hardware acceleration? Or did you just get a message saying Cinnamon crashed? Those are two different messages and indicate two different problems. We need to know what the message was in order to be able to help you.

This statement seems to indicate you received a message about no hardware acceleration when Cinnamon was installed (before you installed KDE). I do not believe that KDE checks for hardware acceleration, so it would not give you a message. It just would just not work properly.

You currently have created a KDE/Mint hybrid that is a one-of-a-kind install. Its ability to be stable is always going to be in question. It has a different windows manager, compositor, and other components than what Mint uses. I do not know how KDE manages a system with dual graphics (which is what your laptop has).

Several things to check with regards to graphics: What options (if any) are there in your computer's BIOS/UEFI for graphics? If there are options, what is the current setting?

Is secure boot on? You can check by running mokutil --sb-state in a terminal.
