Graphics issues

Post by Cheftian »

Hello I recently moved over from windows to mint OS , Its so much better. However there are some graphics issues that I have.

The first being the secondary monitor keeps freezing up or it greys it self out. The only way to fix it is to change display settings or restart the computer.

The other issue that I am facing is all games when they launch are stuck at 60fps. Even tough the display settings are set to 144hz, The xserver settings "Sync to vblank" and "Allow flipping" are both turned off. Also Gsync compatible is on and works.

Thank you

Welcome to the forums.

If you backup your important stuff, do a Timeshift snapshot and install 5.11 kernel, see if that works for you.

With a 3000 series Ryzen, we normally recommend using a newer kernel than the 5.4 which you have installed.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.11 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.11 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Thank you for replies. I have switched over to 5.11 kernel and the freezing issue has stopped. Still unsure about the 60 fps issue

The freezing issue is back now. It seems to happen when I have demanding programs running.

You can test an even newer kernel, namely the 5.13.x, like this:

The freezing is just an issue with the one monitor you mentioned in your initial post? Or is Mint actually freezing (display on both monitors is freezing)?

Do you have a different cable you can try using?

Please let us know what type of connection you are using (DP, HDMI, etc.) and what the make and model of the monitor is.

Please also provide the output of xrandr and enclose the results within code tags.

Hello I am using Display Port on my primary monitor, And on the affected secondary monitor, HDMI to DVI. I will try other cables. The freezing only happens on the secondary monitor.

The xrandr output lists what options are the * current and + preferred. You are currently using your HDMI connected monitor at its preferred setting, but you are running your main monitor at a much higher frequency than the preferred. If this issue only happens when you have demanding programs running, perhaps cutting back on the frequency of the main monitor might help?

Code: Select all

HDMI-0 connected 1080x1920+2560+0 left (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 476mm x 268mm
   1920x1080 60.00*+
DP-2 connected primary 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
   2560x1440 59.95 + 143.91* 120.00 100.00
DP connection's preferred frequency is ~60, but it appears you are running ~144.

Hello sorry for the late reply. On windows 10 the monitor would work natively at 144hz with out a issue. Is there any way to make Mint OS accept 144hz?

Thank you

That is what xrandr says it is running at right now so I do not understand what you mean about making Mint accept it.

Do you mean accept it and not freeze? That might be an issue with the graphics driver, but I am not sure about that.
