bad performance for video and visio on Intel UHD 605

Post by mohican »

Hello, I got in my hands on two brand new Clevo NL41GU and NL51GU laptops with Linux pre-installed (on re-installed by me).
Both of them have Pentium N5030 + UHD graphics 605 and a full-HD display. See inxi output below.
Lots of RAM (8 GB) and are connected to a very good Internet connexion (optic fiber).

And both have a very hard time when it comes to displaying videos.

1. visio-conference (tested with Jitsi Meet)
with Firefox, Chromium, Falkon : CPU at 100%, sound very distorted -> not usable
with Vivaldi : CPU at 100%, sound ok -> usable

2. playing a Youtube video
with Firefox or Vivaldi : 1080p very choppy ; 720p choppy ; 480p a bit choppy ; 360p : ok

Same results on Mint 20.2 cinnamon, Mint 20.2 xfce and Ubuntu 20.04.

Any idea about how to fix the issue or at least improve it ?
Thank you

This cpu is in the Goldmont Plus family which means it is fairly new. Videos can be intensive web apps to render so I suggest trying the 5.13 kernel to see if that helps this situation.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Did you reboot? That's necessary to actually run a new kernel.

The results with this kernel are exactly the same? What you are experiencing might be related to settings in the browser.

yes I reboot.

For the browser I tried different things, using https://meet.jit.si :
- Firefox customized configuration : not usable
- Firefox recovery mode : barely usable (distorted sound)
- Vivaldi : usable (however CPU is still at 100%)

Have you tried not using hardware acceleration in Firefox?
Settings > General > scroll down to Performance and uncheck "Use hardware acceleration".

Thank you for the suggestion.
Not using hardware acceleration in Firefox results in a small improvement : CPU is now between 80 and 90%, sound is better but still not very good.
I also tried the same setting in Vivaldi : strangely it as no effect : CPU stays at 100% and sound is correct as it was already.

I need to do more testing with different people to know which solution is really better now.
