Acer laptop doesn't see second monitor [SOLVED]

Post by krauster »

I am dual booting (Win10 and Mint 20.2). Laptop is an Acer AN517-52-52T3
External monitor is connected via HDMI port. Win10 can identify the external monitor. This installation of Mint is not finding a second monitor.
What am I missing?

In an Acer forum someone is suggesting:

Check in Mint to verify it can talk to your NVIDIA GPU, which should be handling your external ports. It may not be using it, so can't see them...

I've brought up the NVIDIA X Server Settings app and it puts up a small box with nothing in it. Anybody know how I can fix this?

There should be an nvidia-prime-applet in your panel in the lower right. Considering your inxi output, it should be an Intel icon because you are currently running in Intel Powersave mode. Click the applet to see the options. Switch to On-Demand mode and then reboot your computer to fully complete the switch to On-Demand mode.

With a 10th-gen Intel cpu, your system will run better with a newer kernel. There is both a 5.11 and 5.13 available in Update Manager.

Instructions for upgrading:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Select either 5.11 or 5.13 on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Acer laptop doesn't see second monitor

Post by krauster »

Thanks for the help. In between posting the last stuff and your post I decided to reinstall Mint from a flash drive. Did that and was still having problems, although it was seeing external monitor, but the screen was black except for a squeezed cursor I could move across it. Then I saw your suggestion to update the kernel. That fixed it. And the reinstall and updated cursor also fixed another strange problem I had been having. I was getting a high pitched tone to the external speakers when no audio signal was present, with it going away when audio was playing. That problem seems to have gone away with the reinstall and kernel upgrade.

Still having problems. I thought I had it worked out but made some changes to the desktop settings and couldn't get back to things and since I wasn't too far into the process I decided to reinstall but ran into the same problems and didn't see an opportunity to go through the same process of upgrading the kernel. If my memory is correct from last night, the kernel was already upgraded (which doesn't make sense since I was installing from the same flashdrive, which does have me thinking the install was not exactly a clean one), but still had a second monitor blacked out, although identified in Display.
I am having so many more problems with this dual boot setup on my Acer Nitro than I''ve had on single boot Linux Mint on old dell laptops that I am considering just using the Acer for win10 and getting a used cheap dell or non-Nvidia lenovo for MInt. So I wont be writing [SOLVED] on the topic heading just yet.

The inxi data you posted showed your system using the 5.4 kernel which is the LTS kernel for Mint. I gave you directions to upgrade the kernel to a newer one, so your flash drive would have the older kernel.

There is an ISO with the 5.11 kernel if you want to make a new one (which I would recommend doing for a computer with a 10th-gen Intel like yours). The Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO has the 5.11 kernel.

After you install with that ISO and install the Nvidia driver, you would want to make sure the nvidia-prime-applet mode is switched to On-Demand and then reboot so both monitors can be used.

I haven't really resolved this problem..... and have been struggling with this when I boot to linux, which I would prefer to do but I'm often having to boot to win10 in the meantime.....

I am able to get the second monitor to come up with a combo of a few different things, usually by pulling the HDMI cable and replugging it in and/or playing with sync and resolution settings in Displays. I have a Phillips 4K 27" monitor for the external and have it in front of me for the main monitor with the laptop off to the right.

You mention to run the nvidea applet. Searching through Applications I do have a NVIDIA X Server Settings app, but as mentioned and shown above when I launch it I get a small window that is missing anything in it to set. I don't have any applets that I can find that say Intel that would allow me to play with the Intel Powersave option that was recommended.

I've tried the nvidia-driver-479 (recommended) and the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver and neither gets me through this to get to the NVIDIA applet.

Also I am using the 5.13.0-21 kernel.

That makes it sound like it is a hardware connection issue. HDMI cables are very sensitive to even small misalignments in their connections.

The nvidia-prime-applet is a Mint file and not an nvidia file. It installs and runs automatically when the Nvidia driver is installed. The applet should be running and showing in the lower right of your screen on your panel.

I'm in some state now where I can't get back to it recognizing that there is an external monitor on the HDMI port. The cable seems firmly connected at both ends. And I've tried a few HDMI cables. I also thought about maybe because its a 4K resolution monitor it might need a better HDMI cord? Although I think the one I am using came with that monitor. To check that out I then plugged in another monitor that I don't think is rated 4K and tried it and that also is not recognized.

Here is what I am seeing:
ksnip_20211126-151048.png
I found the nvidia app you mentioned and have tried both settings and after reboots:

I'm starting to think this is not completely a Linux problem. I wasn't noticing this with Win10 but now I am. I just shutdown Mint and restarted and selected Windows Boot Manager
2021-11-26 22_14_51-Photo - Google Photos - Brave.png
to boot to the Win10 login and got black screen on both the laptop and external monitor. I unplugged the external monitor. Got the login screen on the laptop. Plugged in the ext monitor and it shifted over to the external monitor.

So its something in the BIOS?

Many, but not all, dual-graphics laptops have a setting in BIOS/UEFI to switch between Hybrid/Switchable graphics and the Discrete Nvidia GPU. You would want it to be set to Hybrid/Switchable.

Additionally, your computer's manufacturer determines which GPUs run which screens. Some manufacturers wire both GPUs to be able to run the laptop screen while others only wire the Intel to the laptop screen. Many manufacturers only have the Nvidia GPU wired to the external ports (HMDI, DP) while others can have both Intel and Nvidia run external screens. There is not standard and I do not know from the data posted so far what your laptop might do.

There is a Login Window app where you can set which display gets the login screen. I believe the default might be Auto which could be why it was switching screens?

The most recent data you posted still appears to indicate your system is in Intel Powersave mode.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running mokutil --sb-state in a terminal. That will prevent Nvidia driver files from loading even if they are installed.

We can also check to see if it looks like all the Nvidia driver files did install. Please provide the output of dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia and enclose the results within code tags.

With the monitor attached, I would also like to see the output of xrandr --verbose (with the results enclosed in code tags).

I seem to recall others running into a similar issue, but would have to see if I can find those topics to know how they were resolved.

Make sure you are running the most recent BIOS/UEFI available for your laptop. Updates can sometimes address issues related to using external ports.

Before checking secure boot and the nvidia stuff I decided it's worthwhile to make sure the BIOS is up to date so booting to windows I went to the Acer site and downloaded the latest BIOS firmware and installed it. It changed the default from booting to Ubuntu where the grub choice was previously coming up to by default booting to Windows Boot Manager without seeing a choice to boot to Linux Mint.
It booted to Win10 and came up fine with the login screen on the external monitor and the laptop screen as the second one.
By the way I noticed in the Acer app in windows that it does show Graphics device 1 as Intel UHD graphics and Graphic device 2 as NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1650 Ti.

Then changed the boot order in BIOS to Ubuntu first and that gives me the default of booting to Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnnamon. When I did that it took about 5 minutes to boot but it did get to the login screen, but still no external monitor. Subsequent boots are taking less time but it does seem to take longer to boot and shutdown than before, which was very quick.

Now I am back in Mint. Running mokutil --sb-state it says the SecureBoot enabled.

Here is the dpkg output:

Code: Select all

If it turns out that I need to turn off secure boot I'll do that. I remember going through some problems when I was trying originally trying to get Mint onto this dual SSD laptop when I first got it used from somebody and I was pretty confused and that was one of the suggestions someone offerred, to make sure it it was on..... if I remember correctly, which might not be the case.

It appears the Nvidia-470 driver files are installed so it is likely they are not loading at boot time because you did not assign them keys to work with Secure Boot.

Usually the recommendation for installing Mint is to have Secure Boot turned off because it can sometimes interfere with the ability of some drivers to install. However, there are computers where one can not turn off Secure Boot. Mint can work with it on.

So you can either turn off Secure Boot or you can create keys for the Nvidia files so the firmware knows it is safe to load those third-party drivers. (That Secure Boots purpose; prevent third-party software from causing problems during system boot.)

Note that the keys you will make will only work with your current combination of Nvidia driver and current kernel. If you change either of those, you will have to create new keys. For instructions on how to get the Nvidia kernel modules signed (create the keys), go way way way down to the section:
How to install the Nvidia driver with Secure Boot enabled; for drivers installed using Driver Manager, apt or Synaptic in this post.

Before trying to make and register driver keys I thought I'd turn off secureboot in the BIOS Boot tab. I went to the BIOS and did that. Linux shows it is off:

Code: Select all

stev@stev-Nitro-AN517-52:~$ mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disable
by the way, here is the BIOS Security tab next to the Boot tab:

But I don't see the external monitor.

Should I still pursue registering the drivers if turning off SecureBoot isn't helping?

The most recent inxi output you posted indicated your system was running in Intel Powersave mode. Please change to On-Demand mode in the nvidia-prime-applet, reboot the computer, and then post the output of inxi -Gx

So you set it to On-Demand and you rebooted. We will need some more info to figure out why the inxi graphics output did not change.

Please provide the output of cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log and enclose the results within code tags.

Then please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

I'm noticing something. When I try to use the settings button on the rear panel of the Phillips monitor when i have it plugged in and connected to Linux that single joystick style button doesn't work correctly. When I boot to Wndows that button is working as described in the user guide for the monitor. It definitely isn't playing well with Linux. Maybe there's some sort of driver I need to install with Linux for this monitor. Its a Phillips 276E8VJSB. But I'm not seeing any linux drivers for this.
