Fresh install of Linux Mint 20.2 Uma - 2560x1440p option not showing for external monitor

Post by doublehelix1118 »

Problem:

As mentioned in the post title, I've done a fresh install of Linux Mint 20.2 Uma. After the install, I've tried to change the display resolution to 2560x1440p but the option is not available. It always defaults to the maximum available resolution of 1080p.

I've tried the following commands...

Code: Select all

cvt 2560 1440 55
xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_55.00" 284.00 2560 2744 3016 3472 1440 1443 1448 1489 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 2560x1440_55.00
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 2560x1440_55.00
but I keep getting the error as below...

Code: Select all

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed

My system is a dual boot with Windows 10. I have no issues with displaying in 1440p resolution on Windows.

System details are as mentioned below:

Laptop Model: Lenovo ThinkPad T430s
CPU: Intel i5-3320M (4) @ 3.300GHz
GPU: Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 (IVB GT2)
OS: Linux Mint 20.2 x86_64
Kernel: 5.4.0-90-generic x86_64
Desktop Environment: Cinnamon 5.0.7
Window Manager: Muffin 5.0.2
Display Manager: LightDM 1.30.0

Any help to fix my display resolution to show in 1440p would be appreciated.

What is the monitor make and model? Assume you are connecting mini DP port to HDMI on the monitor?

@AndyMH:
Many thanks for your response.
I'm using a Prism+ W270 Pro monitor (Product Page)
Your assumption is accurate. I am using a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter to connect to the HDMI port in the monitor.

Try cvt without specifying the refresh rate cvt 2560 1440 and see if that modeline works. If not:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=280143
It's a long thread, but basically get the modeline with read-edid direct from the monitor.

@AndyMH:

Thanks for your reply. I've tried both approaches that you have suggested. Still no luck.

The output from the command sudo get-edid -b 5 | parse-edid is as below.

Code: Select all

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "HDMI"
        ModelName "HDMI"
        VendorName "SAC"
        # Monitor Manufactured week 28 of 2021

        # Digital Display
        DisplaySize 600 330
        Gamma 2.20
        Option "DPMS" "true"

        Option "PreferredMode" "Mode 12"
EndSection
From this, I took "Mode 0" as the Modeline I need to add with the xrandr commands. Therefore, I typed in the following commands in the terminal.

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2560x1440_1" 246.90 2560 2608 2640 2760 1440 1443 1448 1491 +hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode HDMI-1 2560x1440_1
xrandr --output HDMI-1 --mode 2560x1440_1
The output from this is still the error message xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using the Nvidia video drivers try using the open source default drivers. I found Nvidia drivers would only support 1920x1080 period, and would not even support lower Res. or higher, since linux Mint 19 distribution. I have dell laptop 17 extreme processor and m3000 GPU 32Gb Ram
