I do not know what packages are and not sure how to reinstall them.
I got the third monitor up and running! not sure how I did.

So now I can launch driver manager. But almost scared to try the recommended 470. What are your thoughts?

I still have not reinstalled "the broken packages".
but this is what inxi -Fxxxrz output is now.

You followed the steps completely in the other procedure which should have fixed all the issues and installed what was having problems.
ixt wrote: Mon Dec 06, 2021 12:01 amII got the third monitor up and running! not sure how I did.
Let's see the output of the X Server log again. The inxi data is again showing software rendering (llvmpipe) which usually does not permit multiple monitors to work. However, all the rest of the drivers are showing as installed properly.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 630 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:5912
Device-2: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] vendor: eVga.com.
driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:1c03
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: modesetting,nouveau
unloaded: fbdev,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0 256 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 20.0.8
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

Let's wait. We would want to determine why the software rendering is showing before making changes.

This is still quite high and might be why there are problems doing updates.
Partition:
ID-1: / size: 227.74 GiB used: 205.25 GiB (90.1%) fs: ext4
dev: /dev/nvme0n1p2

Go into Update Manager to see how many kernels you have installed. You really only need one "Active" working kernel and one older working kernel. The rest can be removed.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Select a kernel version on the left panel and then check to see how many of the ones listed on the right panel have the word "Installed" in the middle column.

Yes I know, configuring synology NAS on linux was a pita and I that will take a long time to determine if I have them backed up appropriately. Baby fotos, etc I don't want lost/ The folder structure SUCKS!!! and is different on my NAS. So I do not know how to identify duplicate images of 40 gig fotos :( and what is safe to delete

so screen shot below.
5.4 5.4.0-90 installed. superseded. the 91 above is active supported until 4/23 the rest are all superseded.
5.3=all end of life.
5.0=all end of life except 5.0.0-32
4.18 all end of life
4.15 4.15.0-163 installed supported until 4/23, 4.15.0-54 installed but shows superseded. All the rest superseded.

No idea what kernels are. Are they Mint updates? I want to update to the most recent one but it is so technical I gave up. I would post screenshots but that would be too many screenshots.

The only ones which are installed are the ones that say "Installed" or "Active" in the middle column. That means you have four kernels installed. All the rest are possible options to install, but are not installed.

I will go check the Xorg log now.

Your system is still using both the Intel graphics and the Nvidia graphics.

Normally, when one only has software rendering then it is not possible to run multiple screens. You have all three running, but I think that is because at least some of them (if not all) are running from the Intel graphics. The modeset(G0) is Intel and it does appear to have acceleration.

Code: Select all

There is an error for the acceleration from the Nvidia GPU.

I do not know what you have set in your motherboard to handle the priority of graphics both are enabled. I do not think we can know for sure when the Nvidia GPU is working properly until you turn off the onboard graphics, so I would not recommend installing the Nvidia driver at this time.

Here is a link to the MAXIMUS VIII HERO User Manuals. Reading through the English version, I found on page 3-28 the option for Graphics is under the Advanced tab of the BIOS and the option is Graphics Configuration.
Graphics Configuration
Allows you to select a primary display from graphical devices.
Primary Display [Auto]
  • [Auto] The primary display will be set to PCI-E when a PCI-E graphic
    card is detected.
  • [IGFX] Force the primary display to be from the IGFX Graphics.
  • [PEG] Force the primary display to be from the PEG Graphics.
  • [PCIE] Force the primary display to be from the PCI-E graphic cards.
iGPU Multi-Monitor [Disabled]
Set this to enabled to empower both integrated and discrete graphics for multi-monitor
output.
Configuration options: [Enabled] [Disabled]
I suggest you check in your BIOS to see what settings you are using.

Ok under igpu it said auto. I moved it to disabled. Primary display says auto.
The rest to choose is igfx or peg. There is no other pcie

I will try to keep it on auto. So it chooses the graphic card somehow.

i think PEG means PCI Express Graphics, choosing this will make the BIOS use your nvidia gpu only

Ok all three monitors work now on just the GPU.

Do you have a Realtek wireless device? It seems the driver module for it was removed in this process for both the 4.15 and 5.4 kernels.
CODE: SELECT ALL

dkms: removing: rtl8821ce v5.5.2_34066.20190614 (4.15.0-162-generic) (x86_64)
dkms: removing: rtl8821ce v5.5.2_34066.20190614 (5.4.0-89-generic) (x86_64)
I did have one installed but could not figure out how to get it to work. So I hard lined to the internet a while ago with an ugly blue cat 5 going across my carpet.

What should I do about those kernels?

I am now getting a GPU crash when I click on my nas network drive. It pops up a message about noevau so fast I can't read it then logs me out.
Driver mngr though comes showing me noevau is in use, should I try 470?

This is still showing software rendering although just nouveau is being used.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] vendor: eVga.com.
driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:1c03
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nouveau
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 10.0.0 256 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 20.0.8
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

I would like to see the Xorg log to see what it shows with regards to rendering before trying the Nvidia driver. I think using the Nvidia driver will be okay since multiple monitors do not usually work if the computer is doing software rendering. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

The kernels are not a problem. That was just a message saying the wireless driver was being uninstalled. The wireless device is not even showing as an option in you inxi output. Is it part of your motherboard or is it a separate device? The reason I ask is others have run into issues with graphics when their network devices were not working properly.

Are you clicking on the drive in File Manager or are you using some other interface to access the drive?

nouveau on modern cards for me serve only one purpose: be replaced by the proprietary driver, sure go ahead with the proprietary driver, if you crash you fallback to the software rendering mode, you can experiment with another driver version if the 470 don't work right.

It is like Internet Explorer on Windows, it sole purpose is to download another browser.

Tried 470 and got an error I had back earlier in the the thread.

Code: Select all

pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: new libnvidia-gl-470 (313)
I will try another one. Tried the 390 and got this.

Code: Select all

pk-client-error-quark: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470 but it is not going to be installed
  libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470
 (268)
getting all sorts of errors now.

trying 460
Same error

Code: Select all

pk-client-error-quark: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470 but it is not going to be installed
  libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470
 (268)
and

Code: Select all

pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: new libnvidia-gl-460 (313)
Trying 495

Code: Select all

pk-client-error-quark: Error while installing package: new libnvidia-gl-495 (313)
Not sure what now.
HAve not booted my computer yet.

Did you do this somewhere and I just missed seeing it?

Someone else ran into a similar quark issue and the below helped them resolve the issue.

That will downgrade all libc6 and related packages installed on the system with version 2.31-0ubuntu9.3 to version 2.31-0ubuntu9.2. It should only say it will downgrade packages; it should not remove anything.

I'm looking to see if I can find more info about the error you saw when trying to install the Nvidia drivers.

I found someone with the same issue earlier this year [Solved?] Nvidia drivers won't install after kernel update, was working before no issues which took a lot of trial and error and repeated installs to get things working.

Someone posted at the end the issue found on an Nvidia forum was a different compiler version was used for some of the packages. The person made a suggestion, but at this point I'm not sure if it would work for you and I'm not sure whether that solution might cause other issues.

There is only one GPU showing now.

Code: Select all

[ 20264.462] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
[ 20264.463] (--) PCI:*(0:1:0:0) 10de:1c03:3842:6264 rev 161, Mem @ 0xde000000/16777216, 0xc0000000/268435456, 0xd0000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x0000e000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
But it is still failing hardware acceleration. I found an old bug report with the below messages, but the nouveau version you are using is slightly newer. I also thought there was an even newer version available, but maybe that is only for LM20 (ie. a newer Xorg version).

Code: Select all

[ 20265.586] (EE) NOUVEAU(0): Failed to initialise context object: 2D_NVC0 (0)
[ 20265.586] (EE) NOUVEAU(0): Error initialising acceleration. Falling back to NoAccel
[ 20265.586] (**) NOUVEAU(0): [COPY] acceleration disabled
...
[ 20265.588] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
One item I noticed in each of these Xorg logs is the first two autoconfigured drivers are the same. That happened even when Intel was enabled. I've not seen that before.

Code: Select all

[ 20264.464] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 0
[ 20264.464] (==) Matched nouveau as autoconfigured driver 1
I went back to the gpu-manager.log you posted and it indicated the nouveau driver was black-listed. That may be why there are issues, however I'm not sure why it is blacklisted (unless maybe there might be nvidia files installed causing issues).

Please let us know the output of ls /etc/modprobe.d. Please also make sure you are still running the nouveau driver and then remove all nvidia driver files from your LM19.3 install by running apt purge nvidia*. Do not try installing any Nvidia drivers at this time.

I am not familiar with the Zoom app to know specifics on it, but you have two choices listed there to fix it.
Open a terminal and run one of the below options:
  • pkexe synaptic
  • sudo apt install -f
Your drive really needs cleaned. That might be part of the reason you keep getting broken dependency issues. Packages may not have enough room to install properly. Might be time to start reviewing baby photos and get your backups organized.

When you run inxi -Gx, the output indicates which driver is installed for your Nvidia GPU. If you were not able to successfully change to Nvidia then I would expect you are still running the nouveau driver.

I did not see anything unusual in the modprobe directory.
