EVGA RMA/Drivers problem.

Post by ixt »

I am trying to get my new card replacement to work and cannot figure the drivers out.
Card is a GTX 1060 SSC. I have three monitors. I am not fluent at command line and googling for answers.

Use 'Driver Manager' to install the NVIDIA driver. v470.86 is likely the current recommended driver.

p.s. I got a EVGA Geforce 1050 Ti 4GB and the v470 driver works fine.
MainPC: i5-3550 (undervolted by -0.120v (CPU runs 12c cooler) /w stock i3-2120 hs/fan) | 1050 Ti 4GB | 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | Backups: AMD E-300 CPU (8GB RAM) / Athlon X2 3600+ CPU (@2.3GHz@1.35v) (4GB RAM) | All /w Mint 21.x-Xfce

I only have access to terminal for commands and I do not know how to open driver manager. Having access to display config would be good too.

What did you do that you only have access to terminal for commands?

Section 5 of READ: How To Get Help! explains the data we need to be able to help you. Please provide that system data entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

I have three monitors. My right one is the only one that comes on. It is HDMI connected to the card.
My left is DVI connected and middle, display port.
When I boot, the right monitor is the only one I can enter password. Enter desktop but there is no UI so I right click desktop open in terminal and I can use terminal. All I am doing is typing a python command to open browser to trouble shoot. The other monitors show as inactive. That is why I am trying to get to desktop settings via terminal to change the desktop setup. I also cannot get to driver manager except through terminal and I do not know the command. I am not sure what settings to have in bios to assure graphics are going through GPU, not integrated gfx

That is because your system is currently running in software rendering mode (llvmpipe). All the screens can not work in that mode.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel HD Graphics 630 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:5912
Device-2: NVIDIA GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] vendor: eVga.com.

The data also indicates the Nvidia driver is not installed properly. The nouveau driver is loaded.
Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running mokutil --sb-state.

The data you posted indicates the Cinnamon desktop is installed, so it should load.

System:
Host: ixt l Kernel: 5.4.0-91-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc
v: 7.5.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 4.4.8 wm: muffin 4.4.4 dm: LightDM 1.26.0
Distro: Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia base: Ubuntu 18.04 bionic

You indicated you are using python code to get a browser. Did you install python code on your computer? Mint uses python for its UI and if you installed a different version then it may be interfering with the version used by Cinnamon and that may be why the Cinnamon desktop is not loading.

This very full root partition is also a problem. You are going to soon have problems logging in to Mint.

Yes I installed Python a year ago when taking some coding classes. Never had any problems with it back then.

Also, for the last year I always have had boot up problems off and on when the drive the os is installed on gets full.
Linux gives no popup warnings so it is a constant struggle. It just crashes or does not boot. I then somehow get it clean enough to have it boot.
Not sure how to clean up things. Are you saying my linux partition is too small, and can be made bigger on the drive I have it on?

and no, it is not running in secure boot mode. when I ran mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled
I am not sure how to boot into safe mode, unless there is a choice in bios.

Actually, others have indicated Mint does give pop-ups when the drive is getting full. I do not know why yours would not.

However, I also do not know why you are not getting the GUI when you log in. For how long have you not been getting the GUI?

You have a lot of software installed so I'm not sure how much room you can make available, but here are some tips How to Clean Linux Mint Safely.

What is the output of cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log?

Thanks for your assistance.
Yeah I need to remove software I am not using. I need to find a way to scour things I am not using.

I have been without a GUI for a few days. Maybe I need to unplug the other monitors and reboot. to see if it works. I will try it after I post this.
Here is the output for cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log

Re: EVGA RMA/Drivers problem.

ok so it worked. I had my GUI on the one (right) monitor which is HDMI. Driver manager said 470 in use.
I shutdown.
I connected my middle monitor Display port.
and left monitor DVI.

Turned computer on. my right(HDMI) and middle turned on NO GUI.
the left on DVI. shows. OUT OF RANGE..
I guess my left monitor has the GUI but I cannot see it.

The inxi data you posted indicates the Nvidia driver is not being used.

The gpu-manager.log is also showing some odd results. (Will make a separate post on that.)

Did this problem just start happening when you switching to the Nvidia 470 driver or was there something else which happened which caused the problem? You've been using Mint for quite a while and I presume it was working before this issue cropped up.

There are some "unusual" messages in this log when compared to your inxi output. The nvidia driver is not blacklisted, but it is also not loaded. (It showed as "alternate" in inxi).

Code: Select all

Is nvidia loaded? no
Was nvidia unloaded? no
Is nvidia blacklisted? no
Is intel loaded? yes
The nouveau kernel driver and its display component are showing as installed in inxi, but the renderer is not. However, it is showing here as blacklisted which means it should not have installed. Usually, the blacklisting of nouveau means nvidia will install.

Code: Select all

Is nouveau loaded? yes
Is nouveau blacklisted? yes
I read back through your first post where you indicate you changed graphic cards. Please let us know what you had before the GTX 1060 SSC.

It appears you desktop is setup for using both the onboard and the discrete GPUs (drivers for both loaded). Usually, that is a BIOS/UEFI setting on a desktop to determine which one is used.

Ideally, I would like you to switch back to the nouveau driver in Driver Manager and then post the output of inxi -Gx, but I'm not quite understanding what you are or are not seeing on-screen to know if that is possible.

I had EVGA GeForce GTX 570 HD 2560MB. RMA'd it in for 1060 ssc.
So I found out what "out of range" means for my DVI monitor. I guess the 1000 and above GPUs do not use analog anymore? So I bought a display port cable on amazon.

Yes I am not sure where to find that in bios. Forgot. I switched to integrated grafx when I rma's the cards so I could work on one monitor.

Yes I would like to do that. I can since I have access to the driver mngr.
I will switch back to nouveau driver and then post the ouput of inxi -Gx.

Ok well. I just tried it and all it gave me was a popup from within driver manager that says the following.
pk-client-error-quark: The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470 but it is not going to be installed
libnvidia-gl-470: Depends: libnvidia-common-470

That was when you selected the xorg-nouveau driver?

I've seen people post they got that error when installing the Nvidia driver (which makes sense because those are nvidia files), but that seems odd to get that with the nouveau driver.

Time to check the Xorg log. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

Hey I found out why my HD is overloaded. I accidentally downloaded like 40gigs of fotos from my phone to it thinking it was going to my NAS. I can work to solve that prob so os runs smoother.

Also. I think I messed up my system when I was trying to delete the software nvidia server settings. The install is bad. It launches but it's broken.
