Multidisplay not works in AMD Ryzen 7 4800U with [AMD/ATI] Renoir Graphics

Post by jorgevp »

Hi to all,

I recently installed Linux Mint 20.2 but I can't configure multi display with two monitors connected with HDMI and Mini DP. Only one of them is displayed when startup the system or MiniDP or HDMI but not both.

I try to find amdgpu drivers for this version but It looks like that is not compatible. In this site (https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=49e132f4e1) I have seen that It could works with some extra config; someone could help me? I would prefer don't uninstall Mint for this little issue.

Thanks!!!!

Welcome to the forum, jorgevp.

Your system is too new for the graphic drivers which come in the 5.4 kernel so no graphic drivers installed. Your system is running in software rendering mode which is why only one monitor works.

Graphics:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Renoir vendor: Gigabyte driver: N/A bus ID: 05:00.0 chip ID: 1002:1636
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.11 driver: ati,fbdev unloaded: modesetting,radeon,vesa resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

To get newer drivers, please upgrade your kernel.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Glad to hear that.

I just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro with Ryzen 5600U and Radeon GPU.
When I installed Mint 20.2, I found my external HDMI screen didn't work.
The solution given in this thread is easy to implement and solved my problem.
I posted this reply to encourage any would-be Mint 20 adopters to go for it.
Thanks to all involved :D

Glad I finally found this post after a night of playing the the BIOS settings.

Upgrading to 5.13 did the trick for me too.
This is on a MSI B450M Mortar Max board with Ryzen 5 5600G. With a DP and HDMI dual monitor output.

Some tips to save some minutes for other users:
1. If the grub menu doesn't show at boot time, press ESC+Shift to activate the grub menu.
2. After booting with the new kernel, go to Update Manage and remove all the 5.4 kernels so the 5.13 kernel become the default.

Linux Mint automatically boots to the highest installed kernel, so 5.13 will be the default rather than 5.4 after you install 5.13.

If it does not become the default, it is possible you have other operating systems installed which have control over grub and you would need to sudo update-grub on whatever OS is in control of grub so Mint gets updated.
