Nvidia Driver Issues
Hello every one. I've been trying to install linux mint on my Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IV_GA401IV laptop for a couple days now. And I having, like many people have had in the past, problems with the proprietary graphics driver from Nvidia itself. I have seen previous posts with the same issue, but unfortunately their suggestions did not seem to help. I hope to rectify that with this post.
Here is what I've done so far:
I booted mint from a usb driver, and was able to do the initial browsing of the os before opting for a real install. I then opted for a boot loader option so that I can still have my instance of windows. This completed successfully.
I got a notification from the driver manager showing me that could change my graphics driver. I chose the latest version of the nvidia graphics driver, then I had to restart to complete the installation. However every time since then, I get a black screen when selecting linux at the boot loader. It is only by entering recovery mode and purging the nvidia driver that I am able to get the normal start-up screen and interface of linux mint. With the default driver (non propriertary) I can get a normal boot (but still only when entering recovery mode).
When attempting to boot with the nvidia driver, I got the following error messages:
nvidia-gpu 0000:01:00.3: i2c timeout error
ucsi_ccg 1-0008: i2c_transfer failed -110
ucsi_ccg 1-0008: ucsi_cg_init failed - -110
I would really appreciate it if someone could point me into the right direction of what I am doing wrong. And If I need to elaborate on anything if you need more info, just let me know!

Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
Your CPU came out after the kernel you are using so the kernel does not have the drivers needed for your hardware. Please upgrade to a newer kernel.
Graphics:

OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.0.3 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes
Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
- Open Update Manager.
- Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
- Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
- Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
I did everything you said, and changed the kernel, and updated the system. However when rebooting I was greeted to a screen of white noise and graphical https://imgur.com/a/rg5hf9s chaos. This time I got the linux mint splash screen so I guess the silver lining is we got one step closer lol!
In case this could help you again, I reran the info command:

Because you had to boot in Recovery Mode to get graphics (and the inxi into), I do not know which mode the graphics of your dual-graphics computer might be.
Please boot normally to a live session of Mint with the Linux Mint 20.2 "Uma" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO which has the 5.11 kernel (and a different ISO than the one you used originally) and see if you are able to get inxi output showing the graphics drivers are installed.

Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
I knew I had seen the Ryzen 9 4900HS before and I found the topic. Here is someone with the same ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IV_GA401IV you have and the drivers are installed with the 5.11 kernel. See the inxi output in the first post of <SOLVED>WiFi not working after Nvidia Driver Installation and Kernel Update with Dual Boot Windows 10.
The 5.13 kernel was not yet available at the time of that topic, but I have not seen any Ryzens having issues with the 5.13 kernel so far.
The 5.11 is supported through February so if it works you can stay with it, but my current concern is the way you installed the Nvidia driver might be interfering with the graphics working properly.

Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
Okay I did a fresh install. Got the 5.11 kernel running and it works great. However, when switching to 5.13 or 5.4, I get the same thing I showed in that picture. So come February what Kernel should I switch to?
Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
There is zero reason to switch to the 5.4 kernel which does not support your computer's CPU.utilitarix wrote: ⤴Thu Dec 09, 2021 9:41 pm Okay I did a fresh install. Got the 5.11 kernel running and it works great. However, when switching to 5.13 or 5.4, I get the same thing I showed in that picture.
What is the output of
SMCGx
? It's odd there are issues with the 5.13 kernel so perhaps there is still something else which needs adjusted. As far as February, the 5.13 kernel will continue to receive bug fixes and patches so the 5.13 available in February would not be the exact same kernel which is available today. Additionally, there is a 5.14-oem kernel available as a possible solution.

Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
Nvidia Performance is the active mode
Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
Were both screens snowy when using the 5.13 or just the laptop screen?
One way to test if the issue is the Nvidia driver or the AMD graphics would be to switch modes to AMD and see if that makes a difference when switching to the newer kernel, if you want to try that.
I do not recall others having issues with the Nvidia driver on the 5.13 kernel, but I think the output I've seen so far has been with a slightly older version of the Nvidia-470. I do not have any ideas off the top of my head as to why the snowy screen would be coming up.
It's fine to stay with the 5.11 kernel which still has several months of support.

Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
The snowy noise appears only on my laptop screen when connected to an external monitor. Switching to the amd power saving mode does not help.
Re: Nvidia Driver Issues
I did some web searches and I am not sure what the issue might be. Because your original issue seems to have been resolved with the 5.11 kernel, I think the original issue has been resolved. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.utilitarix wrote: ⤴Fri Dec 10, 2021 9:36 am The snowy noise appears only on my laptop screen when connected to an external monitor. If the 5.13 issue is still there when the 5.11 goes end of life, we can see what options are available at that time. There is a 5.14-oem kernel available now which you can install with
sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d
and a reboot. However, I'm not sure why the 5.13 is not working so I do not know if the 5.14-oem will work.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.
