Problems with Intel iRIS Xe Graphics on Mint 20.2 [SOLVED]

Post by ThP »

I have some problem trying to install linux on my new laptop with the same card: Intel Iris Xe

Code: Select all

thanasis@thanasis:~$ inxi

After trying ALMOST EVERY distro in distrowatch, the only working solution is LinuxMint 20.2, upgrading the kernel 5.4 to 5.8.
If I try to upgrade the kernel to 5.13 as it is proposed from the update manager, the result is a complete disaster from the graphics. Tearing, blinking and no brightness controll - screen resolution and I must downgrade and remove the new kernel to have things working again.
Any Ideas?

Welcome to the forum, ThP.

I split your question from the SOLVED topic because that was SOLVED and your issue is a new one. We ask users to not add new questions to old topics, but create a new topic instead.

The 5.8 kernel stopped receiving support in August, so you do not want to be using it. However, to be able to help you we need to see more specifics about your computer's hardware.

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

There is a newer BIOS available for your computer according to Lenovo Support page for ideapad 5 Pro-14ITL6. It is GDCN59WW. I do not know if that might help.

Did you try upgrading to the 5.11 kernel? I seem to recall someone else's computer having issues with the 5.13 kernel, but the 5.11 worked.

The 5.11 kernel will receive support through February and hopefully by then whatever issue you experienced might be fixed in the 5.13 kernel. Additionally, there are also two OEM kernels available to try and there are some workarounds available for blinking issues and tearing issues.

Try the 5.11 kernel and let us know if it works for you. Others have had to add a kernel parameter for blinking issues, so it would not be unusual to have to do that, but let's see if it might be needed.

I can`t perform this BIOS update because it is a windows update and windows have been permanently deleted from disk (never booted...)

I tried the 5.11 kernel which also causes the same problems as the 5.13
and I have also tried linux-image-oem-20.04 which leads to a total black screen with no response and no terminal access after reboot
and so I must reinstall (again)

You might want to look into what options you have for BIOS updates because they often fix problems which can not be fixed any other way.
ThP wrote: Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:44 pm I have also tried linux-image-oem-20.04 which leads to a total black screen with no response and no terminal access after reboot
What is the "linux-image-oem-20.04"? That sounds like it might be the 5.6-oem kernel which went end of life a long time ago? That kernel does not have the graphics drivers for your system so I would expect it would give a black screen if you booted to it. I have no idea why you would try that since no one here suggested doing that.
ThP wrote: Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:44 pm and so I must reinstall (again)
Why don't you just boot to a live session of Mint and restore to a Timeshift snapshot of when the system was working? Changing kernels is one of the easiest changes to make and should not require re-installing the operating system. It actually should not require reverting to a snapshot either, but I don't really understand what you installed so your latest change might need a snapshot to fix it.
ThP wrote: Tue Dec 07, 2021 1:44 pmI tried the 5.11 kernel which also causes the same problems as the 5.13
How are you going to test the kernel parameter if you keep changing which kernel you are using? I asked you to report back your results so we could offer the next suggestion if that did not work.

Unfortunately I did not find any options for BIOS update

It takes only 5-6m to reinstall and with separate \home and keeping .allmywantedfiles never considered it as a big problem...
(And I must read a guide about how to use Timeshift and snapshots...., never used it and I have no idea how it works - I use exclusively linux since 2008 but my knowledge about it is extremely low - simple user: firefox, thunderbird and mostly darktable)

Here we go: I install 5.11 kernell, reboot and nothing happens! everything works fine!
I continue with 5.13, reboot again and also nothing changes, still all things working fine!
I check with grub customizer:

but checking with inxi shows that 5.8 is still in use!

I do not know exactly how "dummy transitional packages" work and that was not going to be my recommendation. I was going to recommend updating by running sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d and rebooting to install the 5.14-oem kernel.

Did you keep /home from a prior version of Mint? There are hidden configuration files in /home and sometimes not doing a fresh install means you would not be getting the latest versions of files. That can sometimes result in issues.

There have been enough people who have messed up their systems with grub customizer that we generally do not recommend using it. I can not help fix issues related to grub customizer and it has been known to be hard to remove from one's system.

Did you keep /home from a prior version of Mint?
I always keep /home in separate partition so I don`t have to copy my files
(mostly photos and papers) after every new install (even after changing distro)
There are hidden configuration files in /home and sometimes not doing a fresh install means you would not be getting the latest versions of files. That can sometimes result in issues.
The hidden files that I usually keep are .mozilla and .thunderbird so I don`t have to reconfigure them after every new install. I delete the rest hidden files before every new install. It works fine since 2008 after my first linux installation.
There have been enough people who have messed up their systems with grub customizer that we generally do not recommend using it.
I did not know that grub customizer was a "dangerous" program, since I think some distros have pre-installed it as a graphical application for adjusting GRUB's configuration and I also use it for many years mostly for managing kernel booting and not so often for dual booting managing
The fact you updated to a newer kernel and it did not load means grub customizer is interfering with the process.
First I updated the kernels, then rebooted, then installed grub customizer, so I do not understand how grub customizer interfered
I can not help fix issues
Thank you for advices and patience

If you are letting the new /home install and then copying over the specific files you have mentioned then you would have the latest hidden config files for Cinnamon and that should work.

There are some tasks for which it is fine, but it causes problems for other tasks, so it depends on what you are using it for. The fact you changed the kernel, but the kernel did not change is a problem.

The other possible reason the kernel might not have changed (if it was not a grub customizer issue) is that Linux Mint may not be in control of grub. If you have other operating systems installed it is possible one of them are in control of grub. That means to update the kernel in Linux Mint you would have to go to the operating system in control of grub and run sudo update-grub there for Mint's kernel to update.

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
caused a total disaster to the system and I had to go back and choose 5.8 kernel - uninstall the most recent ones to have things working again.

after some google search - here is an example: https://forum.zorin.com/t/zorin-os-16-i ... hics/10929
it seems that I am not the only one to have this exact problem with intel iris xe and I think that I (we) am stuck with 5.8 kernel

Did the computer explode? That would be total disaster. The fact you can reboot with a different kernel means total disaster did not happen.

it seems that I am not the only one to have this exact problem with intel iris xe and I think that I (we) am stuck with 5.8 kernel
You installed Linux Mint so instead of searching everywhere, I search this forum for others who have Intel Iris Xe graphics to find out what has worked for them. Intel Iris Xe graphics is not new and many computers have it.

In this topic <Solved> HP-15-dy2063x w/11th gen Intel i5 and iRIS Xe graphics the person installed the 5.13-oem kernel with sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04c and it cleared their issues.

The person in this post is using the 5.11.0-27 kernel.

As I already mentioned, there is also a 5.14-oem kernel which can be installed with sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d.

I do not understand why you do not want to use a supported kernel. However, it is your choice to do so.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d

reboot and

Code: Select all

thanasis@thanasis:~$ uname -a
Linux thanasis 5.8.0-63-generic #71~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jul 15 17:46:08 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If you are running Mint and Mint is in control of grub, then the kernel should change. That fact it is not changing indicates there is a problem with your system. That is not a graphics problem, so you will have to make a new topic if you wish to get help with issues which sound like they may be related to your grub customizer install.

I removed grub customiser so that could not be any interference

then I re-upgraded to 5.13, sudo update grub reboot but.....

as I mention on first post
After trying ALMOST EVERY distro in distrowatch, the only working solution is LinuxMint 20.2, upgrading the kernel 5.4 to 5.8.
If I try to upgrade the kernel to 5.13 as it is proposed from the update manager, the result is a complete disaster from the graphics. Tearing, blinking and no brightness control - screen resolution and I must downgrade and remove the new kernel to have things working again.
the same result and even worst with even more crazy blinking, tearing and total black screen comes after upgrading to 5.11 and oem-20.04d

The only working kernel is 5.8 and I don`know why
After trying ALMOST EVERY distro in distrowatch, the only working solution is LinuxMint 20.2
By this I mean that I have the same result: crazy blinking, tearing and total black screen, booting from all other distros live usb stick, so I can not even try them

Solved!

Code: Select all

thanasis@thanasis:~$ uname -a
Linux thanasis 5.13.0-22-generic #22~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 9 15:07:24 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
thanasis@thanasis:~$

Found the solution here: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2339302

1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub

2. Comment out this line:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

3. Add this line instead:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i915.enable_psr=0"

4. Save and close your editor

5. sudo update-grub

6. reboot

Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

The solution you found on a different forum is in many places on this forum. I know that because I have personally given it to many people. In fact, I mentioned kernel parameters in my second post.
SMG wrote: Tue Dec 07, 2021 12:57 pm Additionally, there are also two OEM kernels available to try and there are some workarounds available for blinking issues and tearing issues.

Try the 5.11 kernel and let us know if it works for you. Others have had to add a kernel parameter for blinking issues, so it would not be unusual to have to do that, but let's see if it might be needed.
However, I only give out that solution when I get data to confirm that is the problem. One can grep the journalctl for FIFO errors to confirm that is the problem.

Every time you ran into an issue instead of giving a good description or a screen shot of what you were seeing, you immediately ran back to using the 5.8 kernel saying the newer kernel was disaster and other such hyperbole which is meaningless to someone who can not see your computer screen. Then you added to the problem by continuing to use grub customizer which was messing up the ability to change kernels. That meant it would have been very difficult for me to have you check for the FIFO errors because one needs to know the correct boot cycle to check for them. There was no way for me to guess what grub customizer was doing.
