[SOLVED] 4K resolution not possible using the Lenovo Docking Station

Post by dafischaaa »

Hey there,

I run Linux Mint 20.1. on my laptop. When I connect it to my 4K monitor with my docking station, I'll cannot choose the recommended 4K resolution because I end up with the following error message:

GDBUS.Error:org.gtk.GDBUS.UnmappedGError.Quark._gnome_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code2: could not set the configuration for CRTC 79

My system's configuration:
- Lenovo Think Pad P14s
- Benq EW3270UE monitor
- Lenovo ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen2

Connecting the laptop while using the Windows partition works without any issues, so I guess it's not a hardware problem. Also, if i connect it the monitor directly, it works smoothly.

Same here with two FullHD Monitors (BenQ BL2405) at Lenovo Thinkpad E15 Gen 3 and kernel 5.11. Directly at the HDMI port of the Notebook they work, but not on the Lenovo USB-C docking station.

(Maybe helpful to add that in Windows Monitors on this docking station also only worked if I installed an optional driver for the Monitors.)

Welcome to the forum, dafischaaa.

This link Driver for Windows 10, 7, 8, 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad USB-C Dock Gen 2 indicates there is a driver for that docking station. Do you know what the function of the driver is?
dafischaaa wrote: Mon Dec 06, 2021 3:54 pmAlso, if i connect it the monitor directly, it works smoothly.
Which means there is something about the docking station which is the issue. Some docking stations need to use DisplayLink drivers to function properly, but if you are getting the monitor to work without that driver, then there must be something else about the docking station which is causing the resolution reduction to happen.

Please update your kernel. The 5.6-oem kernel went end of life quite a while ago and is no longer supported. Open Update Manager and see what it recommends. If there is not a kernel recommendation, let us know and we can let you know how to install a newer oem or regular kernel.

Also, the latest Xorg is 1.20.11, so there may be updates for it in Update Manager as well.

Dear SMG,

thank you for the fast answer! I know drivers from using windows although I've never encountered them using linux. As you proposed, I've updated the kernel and also Xorg:

If I typed the correct dock, this Lenovo forum thread might give you an explanation of what is happening 2 Monitors + E590 + USB-C Dock Gen 2 + Ubuntu. One of the responders posted a table of what resolutions are possible with the dock.

If you post the xrandr output both with the monitor directly attached to the computer and with it attached through the docking station we can get an idea of how Mint is viewing the monitor.

Dear SMG,

thank you for your link to the other thread. Indeed, I could now solve the issue by reducing the refresh rate to 30Hz (as indicated in the table in the other thread).

Thank you once more!
