Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
Greetings guys, unfortunately, today I've encountered quite a major problem, which I have no idea how to fix.
I was using my laptop: Lenovo Ideapad 14are05 for around a year now, running Linux Mint on it and not having any problems at all. Yesterday I'd decided to install all the updates from the update manager, as I usually do, and the updates seemed to be installing just perfectly. Today, though, upon booting my system up, I got this:
It looks and reacts just like a static TV noise, so I'm quite perplexed about the cause of this behavior, though I'm nearly sure that something, that update manager has updated, has to be causing the problem. The problem is definitely on the Linux drivers' side though, since I have Windows on dual boot and display still works perfectly there.
The laptop has Ryzen 5 4500u processor and Radeon RX Vega 6 GPU built into it

Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
UPD: The fix to the problem was found: turns out the problem was caused by Linux Kernel 5.13.0.22.22 update. Installing it can immediately cause the issue described above to happen, so keep that in mind while trying it out.
On the other hand, the problem is, thankfully, not THAT drastic, since pushing f1 key repeatedly while Mint is booting up surprisingly fixes it and allows you to enter the system just as if everything is alright.

<Important> White noice issue updating to the 5.13 kernel version might cause
I'm not sure how to format this topic properly, though I do think that I need to point this issue out somehow, since currently there is no information about it on the internet whatsoever, though I do believe that it's rather important and worth noting.
Updating your kernel version to 5.13 might cause the issue described by me in this thread(which I mistakenly put into the wrong forum section, thinking, that the cause of the problem was different): viewtopic.php?f=59&t=363541
The problem consists of getting the TV-like static noise screen on boot, the problem is persistent and can't be avoided even by trying to boot using terminal mode. Though it, surprisingly, can be somewhat avoided by smashing the f1 button repeatedly while mint is booting(starting when the mint logo appears). After doing that, the system will start working as if everything is alright(the problem will manifest once again after the reload though)
The problem is proven to be consistent on a specific processor, namely Ryzen 4500u. Both Lenovo and Asus ultrabooks were stricken by this menace, causing a lot of butthurt and fear to their respectful owners.
Thus, I beg everyone to be cautious, since I'm sure problem might be proven to exist on different hardware configurations as well

Hello, Sanerin.
Kindly share your full Linux Mint System Information with us. The precise steps how to do so can be found here: How to post your Linux Mint System Information (inxi report)
Without knowing any relevant technical details about your hardware, it is hard to tell what the root cause. It may be an incompatibility between your specific hardware and kernel 5.13.0-22 or there may be more factors involved.

Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
Greetings, Karlchen, here is the inxi report you requested(the system is already downgraded to a stable kernel version, which doesn't trigger the problem described above), though I also want to share something worth noting in my opinion:
1)The problem is consistent and manifests even on a completely fresh installment of Linux Mint (As soon as you update kernel version via update manager). Though the inxi report I provided is made on my personal installment, which I was using for a year already
2)The cause of the problem was determined by gradually installing each and every suspicious update via Update Manager, rebooting after each one, seeing whether the problem starts to manifest or not. All the updates excluding the Linux Kernel 5.13 update were installed flawlessly, the problem appeared once again as soon as the Linux Kernel 5.13 update was installed
3)Along with this machine, the problem also appeared on an Asus m415u laptop of a fellow Linux user from Russia, who contacted me directly via the link to the Russian social network "vk", which can be found in my user profile under the "site" category. We were able to solve this problem together.

Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
There is no installation version of Linux Mint with a 5.13 kernel, so you can not update the kernel and run into this problem. Updates are done within a kernel series. For example updating the 5.11.0-38 kernel you have right now to the latest available which is 5.11.0-43 kernel is considered an update. I recommend you run that update.Sanerin wrote: ⤴Sun Dec 19, 2021 12:59 pm1)The problem is consistent and manifests even on a completely fresh installment of Linux Mint (As soon as you update kernel version via update manager). Changing from the 5.11 kernel to a 5.13 kernel is considered an upgrade because you are changing kernel series. The 5.11 kernel is supported through February 2022.
What problem were you having with the 5.11 kernel that you decided to try upgrading to the 5.13 kernel? If, for some reason, you need a newer kernel than the 5.11, there is a 5.14-oem kernel available.
If I have the correct link BIOS Update for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ideapad 5-14ARE05 it appears your system is missing some BIOS/UEFI updates. The latest available is DTCN25WW while your computer has DTCN18WW. So if you are having issues, you might want to consider doing that update before considering a kernel upgrade.
I found 5.13.0-21 startup failed , show white noise screen (lenovo r9000x 4800h nvidia 2060) where a person in the 3rd comment with a Lenovo E14 (Ryzen 7 4700U) ran into the same issue so a bug report is on file for this issue.

Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
I decided to do the upgrade since Linux Mint update manager is actually suggesting me to do so, and, since this is an official source of updates and upgrades, I didn't think that I shouldn't be upgrading it just for the sake of being up to date and that I actually supposed to have a specific issue or problem to try doing so. I thought that the update manager would only suggest properly tested and generally stable updates or upgrades, hence, the fact that it's actually not working properly on some devices after an installment is quite confusing for me. I will try to update my BIOS though, thanks for your reply and noting
Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
Update Manager will do that only if you have a prior 5.13 kernel installed. Once you have one 5.13 kernel installed you will get notices to update it when newer versions are available.
I've never heard of Update Manager giving "updates" to jump from one kernel series to another except in the case of OEM kernels and these are not OEM kernels.
Open Update Manager and select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue. If you have the 5.13 option selected in the left panel, what is showing in the middle column of the 5.13 kernels in the right panel when you have the update you posted showing in Update Manager?

I have the same issue. Oddly, my HDMI attached second display works fine even when the primary display is all snow. Hope this helps. (IdeaPad with AMD ryzen 7 4700U processor and AMD RENOIR graphics)

I have the same issue on a ThinkPad T14s with a Ryzen 4750U. I also tried updating the BIOS to the latest version but it did not help.

Same issue here with kernel 5.13. Fun fact, external monitor (via HDMI) is still working while the built-in screen does not. Rolling back to 5.11 is a temporary workaround.
Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
Hello!
I have the same issue here on my Lenovo Thinkpad since yesterdays update. I have not tried any of the suggested fixes, but I'll do so now.
Luckily I can still use my external monitor connected via HDMI.

Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
I have the same issue. I'm on a ThinkPad T14 Ryzen 4750U (rolled back to 5.11 already):
I was on 5.11 until yesterday, with no 5.13 installed. I have automatic updates enabled in the update manager and it installed 5.13 (although we can consider that an upgrade) for me. I rolled back and de-installed 5.13. But unlike SMG is saying it does pop up in my update manager, suggesting me to install it.

Should be related and it says the problem is solved in 5.14 which is not a solution for us currently because it can be only installed from a 3rd party PPA on LinuxMint 20.3

Also this is the log entry that I captured while the device was not working "[drm] Failed to add display topology, DTM TA is not initialized. kernel 5.13"
Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
There is a 5.14 kernel available for Linux Mint users. The 5.14-oem kernel can be installed withmxr576 wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 19, 2022 5:49 am Should be related and it says the problem is solved in 5.14 which is not a solution for us currently because it can be only installed from a 3rd party PPA on LinuxMint 20.3

and reboot. Or you can install it through Synaptic Package manager.A woman typing on a laptop with LM20.3 Cinnamon.
Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
Thanks for the correction, I am giving it a try, but even if it works, I would rather stick with the HWE version which is currently 5.13.
Re: Static TV-like white noise screen after an update
You would rather stick with a kernel that does not work?
Canonical maintains both the 5.14-oem and the 5.13. Canonical works with hardware manufacturers to make sure the OEM Kernels work on Ubuntu-certified computers.

Ofc, I meant when/if it worksYou would rather stick with a kernel that does not work?
I can confirm that the bug disappears with 5.14.0-1020-oem.
