[SOLVED] hardware acceleration + display issues with new AMD GPU

Post by aVerySpooky »

I'm going to preface this by saying while I am not new to Linux as a whole (a previous arch user), a lot of my ability to work with that distro was a lot of luck and a very, very detailed wiki with a lot of dedicated troubleshooting pages. In short, I know a little bit of everything, but not enough of anything in particular to not still be a complete noob.

Anyway, a week or so ago i purchased a shiny new RX 6600 8G, a pretty nice step up from my old gtx 1650. Arch complained heavily and I'm usually very fond of new experiences so I decided to give linux mint a try instead of trying to mess with arch for hours.

Most of my mint install process has gone very well thus far. It nuked rEFInd, but my windows install didnt care so thats not a priority at the moment. My main issue is that as far as I can tell absolutely everything is running in software and the amd gpu driver is either not installed or not working, and to top it off my monitor is at a fixed resolution of 1024x768@76hz (well below my monitors spec of 1920x1080@165), also not sure if this matters particularly, but my monitor shows up as an internal laptop screen, which it well, isnt. Probably just part of my driver issue, but i thought id point that out as well.

Ive looked to a lot of other topics on this forum, however many of the resolved issues are either with nvidia gpus or with laptops running hybrid graphics, I'd appreciate any help that yall might be able to provide, thanks c:

oh and before i forget, my output from inxi -Fxxxrz:

Re: hardware acceleration + display issues with new AMD GPU

Your GPU is too new for the drivers included in the 5.4 kernel that you're running. The latest 5.13 kernel, available from Update Manager (go to View / Linux Kernels) should fix your problems. If you have any problems with the 5.13 kernel then there's a new 5.14 version that can be loaded via Terminal instead of Update Manager, but I suggest trying the 5.13 first before we consider the 5.14.

Updating to the 5.13 kernel appears to have fixed all of my display problems, thanks!
