[SOLVED] Currently Running Without Video Hardware Acceleration

Post by Ysalys »

The Nag message I get each time I boot up is:
"Check your video drivers
Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration.
You may experience poor performance and high CPU usage."

This is my system:

And, if you check your graphics section of inxi, it indicates you have no graphics driver installed. Nag message is correct. ;)

Your hardware is too new for the 5.4 kernel currently installed. There is a Linux Mint 20.3 "Una" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO which has the 5.13 kernel which would have been a better fit, but it only became available yesterday which was probably after you installed.

You can upgrade to the 5.13 kernel from your current install.
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
Just to let you know, many people with HP laptops have found issues with brightness control using the 5.13 kernel. If you run into that, you can upgrade to the 5.14-oem kernel which usually clears the issue. Install the latest 5.14-oem kernel with sudo apt install linux-oem-20.04d and reboot.

Thanks, I have had nothing but problems since I installed mint onto this puter; it's just not Linux friendly, Loads of tweaking and getting around issues, but I 'just about' have it. So... I will try the 5.13 first, and see, but I think I will most likely have to do the terminal install of the 5.14-oem, and you're right, I just upgraded a couple days ago.
Here goes....

Thanks SMG, I tried the 5.13 and the nag window disappeared, but started flashing the screen, my Brave browser wouldn't show on the screen, and the puter was threatening to crash, so I installed the 5.14-oem kernel, and it seems to be working... fingers crossed. I will be running it for a while this evening, and will leave this thread open for this time, so I can add to this if anything else happens, but so far so good...

Thanks for the feedback. The HP laptops just seem to be doing better with the 5.14-oem.

Yes, it was running better with the 5.14-oem kernel, but my screen just blacked out, came back in a second, and everything froze... no cursor, no response from keys... had to do the heart attack shut down, then a cold reboot, and here we are here now...... Screen is still blanking out for a split second then coming back. Haven't frozen yet.... but I expect it will shortly. Ugh! Love this laptop, but hate how it seems to hate Linux. I only use Linux, and then have to boot to windows when I have to use a program Linux doesn't support, which is very rare.

So, I guess this kernel doesn't solve the problem.... stumped now... Still need help with this....

Screen blanking is an issue with Intel graphics which can be fixed with a kernel parameter. That does not usually cause crashes. This is the first I've heard of the issue with AMD so I'm not sure what the cause might be.

After it blanks and comes back, run dmesg -T | tail -n 200 in a terminal. Maybe we can figure out what the issue might be.

Do make sure you are running the most recent BIOS/UEFI version for your laptop.

I know people with 4000 series Ryzens have been having issues, but they have said the 5.11 kernel has been working for them. The only issue with trying that is that it goes end of life next month and you will have to put kernel package updates for it on hold. (People have already posted on the forum asking how to do that.)

To try the 5.11, install the newest 5.11, then boot into the grub menu, select the Advanced Options, and then select the 5.11 kernel you just installed.

If that kernel works, go into Update Manager and delete the 5.13 and the 5.14-oem kernels so you do not have to go into the grub menu each time. You will also have to put 5.13 kernel upgrades on hold.

The BIOS/UEFI is the most current version, as I had to go through all that grief when installing mint on this puter, because it would not see the Linux to load it; I had to install Grub 2, to give me the choice to boot into Linux. This laptop has been a bear to put my loved Linux onto.

Re: Currently Running Without Video Hardware Acceleration

Post by Ysalys »

Still no screen blinking... Not since last night, when I went into the "display" in System Settings and I see it is now detecting my TV (HDMI cable is plugged in and it never detected the TV before [Had to boot into windows to play any movies on the TV])
I clicked "settings" at the top of that window, and the "Enable fractional scaling controls (experimental)" was on, so I turned that off. It seems to be okay so far this morning.

Re: Currently Running Without Video Hardware Acceleration

Post by Ysalys »

I have been running this puter for 5 1/2 hours now, and there is no more blinking, the video hardware was able to automatically find and install the proper driver for my video hardware, so my nag window is gone, and my graphics are showing much sharper, with full brightness control.
...So the solution for this laptop was:

FIRST - installing the 5.14-oem kernel

SECOND - Going into my System Settings control center, clicking "Display", then in that window, clicking "Settings" at the top, and the "Enable fractional scaling controls (experimental)" was enabled, so I disabled that.

Voila! Working great now! Thank you SMG, for your help; you are a champ!

You're welcome. Thanks for the feedback as that may help others.

I did not realize fractional scaling might be turned on automatically so I would not have even thought of that as a factor in this situation. I thought the default for it was to be off, but perhaps the default setting is different for different hardware.
