4K 60Hz always boots into blackscreen

Post by carlton »

Hello,
i just switched over from Windows to Linux Mint and I'm having a problem I can't figure out by myself:
My display is an LG 27UD58-B. It supports 60Hz in 4K mode, however I need to turn on a setting called "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Color" in the display settings. I got that far on my own and now everything works fine unless I reboot. It reboots into a black screen and I need to go back into the display settings and turn off Deep Color, reboot again and then turn the setting back on and tell Linux to use the 60Hz mode. What am I doing wrong?

I am using Linux Mint Cinnamon 64bit and I have Windows 10 installed on a serparate SSD for work purposes.

Welcome to the forum, carlton.

Your computer is very new and needs to be using a newer kernel than the one in the version of Linux Mint you installed. Normally, with very new hardware we recommend using the Linux Mint 20.3 "Una" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO which has the 5.13 kernel.

The 5.13 kernel is available in Update Manager and will have the graphics drivers your system is currently missing.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA TU116 [GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER] vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: nvidia v: 470.86 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:2187
Device-2: AMD vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0d:00.0
chip ID: 1002:1638
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: nvidia
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa compositor: gnome-shell
resolution: 3840x2160~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2
v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.86 direct render: Yes

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.13 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
I'm not sure if that will clear all your issues because it appears you created your own hybrid version of Linux Mint.

System:
Kernel: 5.4.0-96-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.2.7 wm: gnome-shell dm: GDM3 3.36.3
Distro: Linux Mint 20.3 Una base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal

The windows manager and display manager are supposed to be:
wm: muffin 5.2.0 dm: LightDM 1.30.0

Let us know whether the kernel upgrade helps.

Thank you for helping me out :).
I have updated my kernel to 5.13.0-27-generic.
Device-2: AMD vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0d:00.0
chip ID: 1002:1638
I assume this is the driver for the integrated graphics of the Ryzen 5. I thought that I am using my graphics card, i need not worry about the fact that it cant seem to find the drivers for that.

I have not managed to change my wm and dm but the ones you recommendet are installed. they just seem to be inactive. i dont know how to change that...

my problem has not resolved itself by changing the kernel, to explain it further this is exactly what happens:

reboot with monitor in 60hz mode - boot into blackscreen - change the monitor to 30hz mode - see the grub menu prompting me with this text
GNU GRUB version 2.04
Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word,
TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists
possible device or file completions.

grub> _
since i dont know what to do here i reboot - press ESC while booting - choose boot menu and ubuntu - i get the grub menu that lets me choose between linux and windows and from here on i can boot into linux just fine.
It seems that i cant display grub in 60hz. is that possible?

Yes, it is the driver for the integrated graphics. The fact that driver did not install means your system was not using a kernel new enough to support the hardware. Therefore it did not matter the Nvidia card had a driver when your CPU did not have what it needed.

In the past when others have posted info which had similar results, it turned out they had installed software which added those and changed what was active. The issue in this case is it is also affecting the graphics.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA TU116 [GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER] vendor: Hewlett-Packard
driver: nvidia v: 470.86 bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:2187
Device-2: AMD vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: amdgpu v: kernel
bus ID: 0d:00.0 chip ID: 1002:1638
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: amdgpu,ati,nvidia
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,nouveau,vesa compositor: gnome-shell
resolution: 3840x2160~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2
v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 470.86 direct render: Yes

That compositor should not be in the output. I am guessing it is related somehow to whatever was installed that changed your windows manager. I have no guesses as to what it might be.

There are places in grub where one can specify the resolution. I would have to check, but I think one can also specify the frequency there as well.

That may not be the issue and may not be necessary. All you need is to be able to see the grub menu so you can select from it.

I think just specifying a resolution (any one that gives you full visibility of the menu) rather than letting the system do an auto resolution may be all that is needed. Check this topic Boot screen resolution with Nvidia graphics [SOLVED] for how to achieve what you want.
