System is running without video hardware acceleration

Post by GeekinTraining »

1. This is my first post - please help. I am having a similar problem regarding video hardware acceleration on Gigabyte B550m with AMD Ryzen 5 5600g. Cannot get the GPU to function in HIRES solo without a graphics card installed.

2. The current "display" reads:
A. Display: Laptop Default
Resolution: 1024X768
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Refresh Rate 76 HZ (Frozen - Adjustments thru drop-down menu selections are not available.
B. The pop-up dialog reads:
"Check your video drivers."
"Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration."
"You may experience poor performance and high CPU usage."
"Launch Driver Manager."
C. Launching Drive manager reads:
"Looking for hardware drivers..."
"Your computer does not need any additional drivers..."

3. If I install a graphics card - the "display" reads correctly and works in HIRES
A, Display: ViewSonic Corporation 27"
Resolution: 1920X1080
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Refresh Rate 60 HZ Recommended VSync
Note: Adjustments thru drop-down menu selections are available..

4. Installing a different kernal 5.4.0-96 to 5.13.0-27 did not work. It installed, but the 5.13.0-27 kernal would not go active on re-boot.

5. Hardware configuration is:

Code: Select all

A.System:
  Kernel: 5.4.0-96-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0
Desktop: Cinnamon 5.2.7 Distro: Linux Mint 20.3 Una

6. Why do I want to run off GPU instead of a graphics card? I build computers for the poor who need them for school, teachers, friends and strangers. Having to include a graphics card is costly and unnecessary for these folks. Previously, my personal computer had a Ryzen 5 3400g (Gigabyte B450) which worked just fine with decent HIRES without using a graphics card. The Ryzen 5 3400g has the ability to run on Linux Mint without aprobelm in HIRES.

7. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely, GeekinTraining - Bill Fosseen - Philippines

I am also getting a very similar situation ... I've raised this thread:

Can you see if the following file exists for you, too? I don't know if this is relevent, yet:

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-radeon.conf

No, it is not relevant. The Ryzen GPUs use the amdgpu graphics driver and not the radeon driver.

Nice one, thanks, I'll minimise that in my own post. (I think I saw that in a log)

Welcome to the forum, Bill Fosseen.

A Ryzen 5000 series is very new hardware and the 5.4 kernel (which is much older than your computer) does not have the necessary graphics drivers. The 5.13 kernel does have the drivers, but I do not know why that kernel might not be going active on reboot. There could be several reasons for it.

It might be fastest for you to just re-install with the Linux Mint 20.3 "Una" - Cinnamon (Edge, 64-bit) ISO which comes automatically with the 5.13 kernel. That should load the graphics drivers and then you would not need the separate Nvidia GPU.
