[Resolved] AMD APU ( Ryzen 3 3200G ) Running At A Limited Capacity

Post by Mad_Man_Moon »

So recently the system just decided to stop allowing me to go any further than 1024x768 resolution.

I've no idea why, I'd not done anything to the graphics, it just ... stopped being able to run at high resolutions over HDMI or VNC.

In the Monitor Preferences this is all that's listed, and this is weird, too, because the monitor is a 60Hz 1440p Benq.
monitor preferences.jpg
Previously everything was fine, I'd followed guidelines (I don't remember where from) after my install to have the following commands in GRUB to ensure that the driver loads with X or something, I don't know, I just know that it made the Radeon Vega 8 graphics do something ... then they seem to have stopped working on a recent restart (system crashed).

I see no errors, and the GRUB line appears to be still OK in the massive file:

Code: Select all

linux	/vmlinuz-5.4.0-96-generic root=/dev/mapper/vgmint-root ro quiet splash nomodeset
In checking here, there's a line that says:
and something blacklists the amdgpu module from time to time, which must be un-blacklisted by editing /etc/modprobe.d/* to work
EDIT - Apparently this is not a factor, also the gpu-manager.log indicates that it is not blacklisted, but that could mean nothing, I dunno.

Could the installation / update of VNC / RDP services be to blame for fiddling with X?

Should I update to 20.3 Una, like this post?

Additional Information
I'm currently looking at the System Log Viewer, just let me know what's useful from there, I'll try to edit in what I think might be.

This is why your graphics drivers are not loading. The kernel parameter nomodeset prevents them from loading. Remove that kernel parameter.

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series]
vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: OBFUSCATED chip ID: OBFUSCATED
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: ati,fbdev unloaded: modesetting,radeon,vesa
compositor: marco resolution: 1024x768~76Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.1 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.3.0-devel
direct render: Yes

No only is the driver not loading, but it also appears you have done something to change the Mesa version although that may be because you installed the AMD proprietary drivers--those drivers do not apply to onboard graphics like your computer has. That also could also be causing problems.

btw - The chip ID is exactly the same for all AMD Raven Ridge. It is not personal information. If you run the command we recommend inxi -Fxxxrz that will "obfuscate" all personal information. That's what <filter> in the output means.

That person did not update to Una. They already had Una installed. They just upgraded their kernel. As long as you have nomodeset in your boot parameter, changing the kernel will not make a difference. Changing the kernel may actually cause a problem because it appears you installed the drivers from the AMD website.

Remove the kernel parameter and reboot and provide the output of inxi -Gx if things are still not working properly.

OK, great, thanks, I'll try that now ...

However, I am curious as to why has it worked without a hitch up until now (full resolution available), and then just stops working all of a sudden. :?

FWIW, when I loaded it up stock, it would *not* even begin to get to the GUI without nomodeset. That was the first thing that I had to do to even get the distro to show anything.

Also, I've obviously misunderstood what that does, as I thought that nomodeset meant that it just loaded the drivers later.

Now I have to remember how to edit GRUB

Also, thanks for the inxxi advice, I just took that information from the System Information Tab, so if it has <filter> in it, I'm assuming that it's already obfuscating any personal information.

Oh, and should I remove those drivers?

It actually relates to kernel modesetting with regards to prepping the driver files for use, but the ultimate result on newer computers is that the graphics drivers do not load.

You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to remove it.
Mad_Man_Moon wrote: Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:54 pmOh, and should I remove those drivers?
I suggest taking it one step at a time. Remove nomodeset and see what happens. Troubleshooting is easier when steps are done in stages.

Cheers again, yeah, on #3 I've worked helpdesk my entire life, but I was just running ahead, there. I would've gone step by step for sure. :-)

Cheers for #2, and #1, weird that my mind interpreted it that way. Will restart and report back. :-)

i have ryzen3 2200G and at first i did edit /etc/default/grub to include a bunch of parameters now all i have is :

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash ipv6.disable=1"
to disable ipv6 network.
remove all your grub parameters and be sure to :

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
sudo update-grub
i currently only use kernel 5.4.0-91 with no issues

post output of

Code: Select all

printf "0x%08x\n" $(cat /sys/module/amdgpu/parameters/ppfeaturemask)
i have 0xffffbfff
also post:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail\|amdgpu\|microcode"

Yeppers, thanks for the input, mate.

@SMG removing the nomodeset seems to have done the trick, so alls good. Will mark this resolved, thanks!
