Accursed Nvidia driver [SOLVED]

Post by +Seaweed- »

Greetings, this my first time attempting to use mint and posting here. I'm using it on a new computer, Lenovo Ideapad Gaming. I'm afraid of the infamous Nvidia driver crush which already happened to me (I used the recommend nvidia driver 460.91.03-ubnuntu 0.20.04.1 with 5.4.0-74-generic kernel), forcing me to reboot. I've already rebooted my computer like 5 times and I'm worried about doing it again. How can I upload the Nvdia driver properly without crushing?

P.S. Also I have problem with Wi-Fi which only work with external USB Wi-Fi adapter. I'm sorry if I posted two problems in one post because as far as I know both are Kernel related problems.

My specs are:
Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 15ACH6
CPU: AMD RYZAN 7 5800h 3.2G
Storage: 1TB SSD
RAM: 16GB
GPU: RTX3050TI
Display: 15.6" FHD IPS
OS: Linux Mint Cinnamon 20.2
Kernel: 5.4.0-74-genric

Welcome to the forum, +Seaweed-.

You are correct the problem is related to the kernel, so I am surprised you have not even tried updating your kernel. The kernel you listed is the installed version for the 5.4. However, a Ryzen 5000 series needs a much newer kernel than that and newer kernels are available in Update Manager.

When you go to Update Manager, please run all the updates listed there and then upgrade your kernel using the below instructions.
 • Open Update Manager.
 • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
 • Make sure 5.13 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
 • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
Doing that should install the missing graphics drivers for your AMD GPU. Your computer has both AMD and Nvidia graphics.

After doing that, please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal: inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code markers and paste the results of the command between the code markers
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

Thank you. I did what you said, it fixed the internal Wi-Fi, however it still says that I need to download the Nvidia driver, here are my options (same as before): 1. Nvidia-driver 460.91.03-0ubntu0.20.04.1 (recommended) 2. Xserver-xorg-video-nouveau 1:1.0.16–1 (open source) 3. Nvidia-driver-495.46-0ubuntu0.20.04.1

It also loaded the AMD graphics drivers. This output appears to indicate all the updates have been installed.

Is Driver Manager showing the Xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver as being installed? The data you posted appears to indicate the nouveau driver is installed. Blue is AMD and orange is nouveau.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA vendor: Lenovo driver: nouveau v: kernel bus ID: 01:00.0

I am not sure why the Nvidia-470 is not showing in your list, so I would recommend installing the Nvidia-495. Install it and reboot.

Then check the output of inxi -Gx. If the Nvidia driver shows as N/A instead of nvidia, there are several reasons this could happen.

First reason is your system could be in AMD-Powersave mode. You would check the nvidia-prime-applet which should be in the lower right of your screen and set it to On-Demand mode and then reboot to change that.

A second reason is your system may have Secure Boot enabled. Nvidia driver files will not load if Secure Boot is enabled and MOK have not been enrolled. You can check by running mokutil --sb-state in a terminal to see if it is enabled. If it is, you can either disable it or create the keys (I can give you instructions for doing that, if needed.)

A third reason is sometimes not all the Nvidia driver files load properly. We can check for that after addressing the prior two reasons.

First, I'm afraid of installing the driver. I don't know if it can cause another crush.
The driver manger doesn't show any driver being installed. I don't how to check whether I have AMD-Powersave mode without nvidia-prime-applet which I haven't download yet, but I checked if I have the Secure Boot and it's disabled.

Please provide the output of dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia and enclose the results in code tags.

That is a Linux Mint file which is automatically installed when you install Linux Mint. That means you do not have to download it.

Have you run all the updates in Update Manager? I have a newer version of that applet (1.3.1), but I am also on LM20.3.

You mentioned in your first post, "I'm afraid of the infamous Nvidia driver crush which already happened to me". I have never heard of this and thus have no idea what happened. Please give us more detail about what you did to install the driver and what happened. There is more than one way to install the driver and perhaps I can suggest a different method.

Yes, but afterwards all it offers is to update the firefox browser and the kernel (5.13.0.27.29~20.04.13).

I turned on the laptop afterwards and it was just black screen with blinking white small line and I couldn't do anything and just had to reboot, from what I've heard it's very common problem with nvidia driver in linux . I simply download the recommended one (460.91.03-ubnuntu 0.20.04.1) through the Driver Manager, without updating the kernel (which then was 5.4.0-74-generic).

The problem was likely because you did not have the AMD graphics driver installed because you were using the older 5.4 kernel. Your computer has two GPUs, AMD and Nvidia.

All updates should be done before installing Nvidia drivers.

Please make sure your system is fully updated, then take a Timeshift snapshot (a manual snapshot is fine), and then install the Nvidia-490 driver.

If there is any problem after installing the Nvidia driver, you can boot to a live session of Mint using your install usb, use Timeshift on the live session, and revert back to the snapshot you made.
