New Graphic Card, Now Can't Load Driver (Solved!)

Post by jtamark »

I just went to a new Nvidia GTX 1660 card, from an old GTX 550. Now I can't get the Nvidia drivers to load. Driver Manager just tells me "does not need any new drivers" without giving me info on the drivers I have. The Nvidia XServer applet won't work either.

When I download the Linux drivers off of the Nvidia website, they load really sloooow, and then give an error.

Here's the output of $ inxi -Fxxxrz, I hope someone can help this beginner out.

Did you switch from the proprietary Nvidia drivers to the open-source nouveau driver before you changed the cards?
jtamark wrote: Sat May 21, 2022 9:15 pmWhen I download the Linux drivers off of the Nvidia website, they load really sloooow, and then give an error.
The drivers from the Nvidia website are slightly different from the ones you get in Driver Manager. You can not mix both installations. You have to make sure you removed all the package management (ie. Driver Manager) Nvidia files before installing the ones from the website. You will have problems if you install both simultaneously.

Also, do not install the Nvidia-510 driver on a system using MATE because there is currently an unpatched bug for focal (Ubuntu 20.04) as described in this topic Weird problem with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 and nvidia-driver-510.

If the error you received when you tried to install the website drivers stopped the installation, that is good. If some of the installation started then run the uninstaller.

Purge all the installed nvidia packages with sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*

Boot either with nomodeset or into Recovery Mode and then install the Nvidia-470 driver which should be the one recommended in Driver Manager. List in detail any errors which show (if there are any errors) when doing that. Some of the older driver versions, which you probably used with the GTX 550, can leave bits and pieces and can cause problems, but usually the errors will give us an idea of we would need to do to fix it.

Let us know if you have questions about anything I have listed.

SMG, thank you for the thoughtful and full reply.

I tried to purge nvidia package w

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
but I am not sure that works, as after re-boot, I still see a number of Nvidia applications.

Rebooting w

Code: Select all

nomodeset
didn't work, as I coudldn't find the "quiet splash" line to add nomodeset. I booted into recovery mode, but couldn't see how to add the Nvidia-470 driver.

However, rebooting from Bios Mode was a big help, as the display is now readable, although Nvidia X Server app still does not work. A regular reboot still produces bad results, with a huge interface that is barely readable.

I tried to find my current drivers, please take a look:

joe@joe-Studio-XPS-435MT:~$ lspci -vnn | grep VGA
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660 Ti] [10de:2182] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia
04:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation TU116 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

joe@joe-Studio-XPS-435MT:~$ nvidia-settings --version

nvidia-settings: version 470.57.01
The NVIDIA X Server Settings tool.

This program is used to configure the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver.
For more detail, please see the nvidia-settings(1) man page.

What does "rebooting from BIOS mode" mean?

That looks like the Nvidia driver is installed and loaded. However, you may be running into the issue where the nvidia driver is a little slower to load than the nouveau driver and nouveau sneaks in ahead of nvidia. See if the workaround in this post [SOLVED] NVIDIA driver failing sometimes on boot ("no hardware acceleration") clears the issue for you.

If not, let us know the output of inxi -Fxxxrz and dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

SMG,
After the "purge" command I am seeing Nvidia applications, like Nvidia X Server setting app (which isn't working). Does this command not remove all Nvidia elements?

I tried the suggestion in the link below to edit the modules file. That wasn't effective. No change.

When I say "rebooting from Bios" I mean rebooting, interupping the boot to go to the bios page, and then booting forward from that. When I do that, the screen is readable, normal, although the Nvidia X Server app doesn't work.

Here are the results (the Huge display is making it unable for me to copy/past normally):

The data you posted indicates a purge did not happen.
jtamark wrote: Sun May 22, 2022 9:52 amWhen I say "rebooting from Bios" I mean rebooting, interupping the boot to go to the bios page, and then booting forward from that.
I'm sorry, but I do not understand what that means. What page are you using in the BIOS from which to boot? I do not understand what is different about that sequence.

Are you sure you are not using the grub menu and then booting in Recovery Mode? Recovery mode would match the description of the size and the fact your inxi output is showing no graphics driver loaded. (The system is running in software rendering mode, llvmpipe.)

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA TU116 [GeForce GTX 1660 Ti]
vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 04:00.0
chip ID: 10de:2182
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: fbdev,nouveau
unloaded: modesetting,vesa compositor: marco v: 1.26.0
resolution: 640x480~73Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 128 bits)
v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

The package output you posted indicates the most recent Nvidia-390 driver is installed. That driver was just released earlier this week. There are also a few other scattered files, but not enough to change which driver is running. The Nividia-390 is the most recent driver available for the GTX 550.

The fact your system is showing that driver and your system still has the nvidia-prime-applet installed indicates the purge did not happen. One has to manually install the applet (which your system does not need because it is not dual graphics) after a purge.

Please check the /var/log directory and check if there is an Nvidia installer log file there. If that file exists, please post its contents and enclose the results in code tags. Displaying terminal output in a post has a graphic on using code tags.

Yes, boot from the grub menu, and then in recovery mode. After that, my display is normal. If I boot normally, then the video card isn't engaged and I just have "on-board" graphics (barely usable). Does that indicate what the issue is?

How can I find the /var/log directory to check for a Nvidia intaller log file?

Your Intel Core i7 920 does not have on-board graphics so I'm not sure what you are describing.

When you boot in Recovery Mode, the system prevents the graphics card from being used and just uses software rendering. It appears it is using the nouveau display driver in that mode, but the system needs more than a display driver to work properly so your system is not working properly in that mode.

You should be able to navigate to that directory using the File Manager app (Caja in MATE). Expand File System to see the directories which are listed alphabetically (so /var will be near the bottom).

Or run

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/nvidia-installer.log
in a terminal. You will get output if the file exists.

I do not recall if there is a new log created with a different name if the uninstaller is run, so it might be a good idea to check the directory in Caja if you get a response saying 'no file found' when you run that command.

Thanks for the instructions. I ran the terminal code, and got a "no such file" response. Didn't see anything "Nvidia" in the var or the log directories.

So...should I re-try the purge command? Or...I'm open to ideas. How can I get my graphics card working?

Yes, let's try that. Post here the output you get from the command.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
After you run it, you will want to reboot into Recovery Mode (which I believe is your 'reboot into BIOS' terminology). That will automatically add the nomodeset parameter.

If the purge worked properly, running

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
should not bring up files and you should be able to go to Driver Manager and install the Nvidia-470. If you do get files from the command, post the results here.

Wow, the purge command did a lot that time. I can't post it, as the content is too big for the post rules.

I'll reboot into Recovery mode,

Run: dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

If that comes up empty, then I'll go to Driver Manager and load the driver for a GTX 1660 (that's Nvidia-470, right?

That sounds like it worked this time.

Because you are using MATE, you do not want to use the Nvidia-510 and I believe the Nvidia-470 is what others with MATE are using. I also think the 470 will come up as the recommended driver.

Rebooted into Recovery mode, and ran dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
but it seemed there were still Nvidia files, the command found this result:

joe@joe-Studio-XPS-435MT:~$ dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

That's not enough for the driver to load, so run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge *nvidia*
again and see if it at least removes all the ones with the 390 in them. Even if it does not, go ahead and install from Driver Manager.

That did it!!!

I did another purge, and then went to Driver Manager. The Manager found three drivers; 510 (Manager recommended), XServer Nouveau, and 470. I loaded 470 and things look great.

Thank you SMG, for getting this running. I could not have done it without your expertise, and willingness to help.

I guess they changed the recommendation.

As far as I am aware, the bug causing the problems with MATE and the 510 driver was patched for Jammy (Ubuntu 22.04) so it should work for the upcoming Mint 21.

There is a workaround for focal that the person in this post successfully used, but I recommend taking a Timeshift snapshot before trying it. That person needed the 515 driver (the problem is with all drivers after the 470) for some applications they were running. If you do not need the newer driver, it may just be easier to wait for Mint 21 and then upgrade to the newer driver then.

SMG, I will wait for Mint 21. The new video card is providing enough of a boost without messing w another driver.

Thanks again!
