Need to change screen resolution from prompt.

goto the menu select Preferences --> Screen Resolution and the Screen Resolutions Preferences panel will be displayed. Select the drop down from the Resolution bar and choose: 800 x 600, then select apply.

At the login screen select ctrl+Alt+F1. This will put you in TTY mode enter your username then enter. You will be asked for your password. Enter it (you will not see any asterisks). Then enter the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This will bring up the X configuration utility. Answer the questions. When done and you are returned to the prompt in TTY, select Alt+F7. You should see the login screen.
