Razer Stealth no hardware acceleration Help

Post by mintyvinics »

Hi all,

I am a Linux newbie. I recently installed Fedora on my desktop 0 issues but when trying to install Mint 20.3 on my new Razer Stealth laptop, I have been running into issue after issue. First the live USB would not boot, the screen would freeze during startup. A little digging around this forum led me to try the "nomodeset" boot option although it is not recommended. It is the only way I got LM to boot. After I installed to the hard drive, the drive manager always displays the "no hardware acceleration" message in the top right corner. I have tried every solution I could find i this forum with no success. I am currently updated to 5.15 kernel. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, mintyvinics.

Using nomodeset prevents the graphics driver from loading. It actually is not needed to boot the live USB because one can use compatibility mode which does the same thing.

For your computer, I would recommend using the Linux Mint 20.3 "Una" - Cinnamon (Edge) ISO which has the 5.13 kernel. That kernel has the graphics driver for Intel and you should be able to boot it in regular mode.

The problem seems to be your system is not loading the Intel graphics driver. Your computer has dual graphics, so it is necessary to have both the drivers for Intel and for Nvidia loaded for everything to work properly. The Intel driver should load automatically from the kernel. The 5.15 kernel should be new enough to have that driver.

Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: Razer USA driver: nvidia v: 470.129.06

compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Did you install the Nvidia driver using Driver Manager? If you did, then I would suggest creating an install usb using the Edge ISO link I provided and boot to a live session to see if the Intel graphics driver is loaded.

I booted from live USB and neither driver installed. Note: I booted in compatibility mode.

Did you boot from the same live usb you used originally or did you create a new one? Sometimes people have had issues with the Intel driver not loading and creating a new usb (with an ISO from a different mirror) clears the problem.

However, if you did create a new usb and that still did not work, then we will want to check logs to see if there is any clue as to why the driver is not loading. Please run the following on your installed version of Linux Mint and let us know the output.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|i915"
Please also check to see if you are running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your system. The information I found indicates the latest is version 1.04.

I downloaded both the driver update and BIOS update from Razer's site. I am not just trying to figure out how to install those in Linux.

Ok, so I had to reinstall Windows, then update the BIOS, then reinstall LM and so far it is looking good.

I did get the impression the update would only be available in Windows. Glad you were able to get it installed and now the Intel driver is loading. You will now want to take a Timeshift snapshot of your working system so if you run into any issues, you can return to this working state.

Currently your system appears to be running in Intel-Powersave mode (using the Intel GPU).

The Nvidia GPU is using the open-source driver. If you want to use the proprietary Nvidia driver, you can install it from Driver Manager. After doing that and rebooting, you should be able to switch GPU modes using the nvidia-prime-applet. Nvidia-prime-applet is explained under the NVIDIA Optimus section in the Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon: New Features. In the graphic in that section the applet is the Intel icon. (It can be either an Intel or Nvidia icon.)
