Second monitor on HDMI not working in Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon

Post by kozborn »

Hi, I just got brand new laptop Hyperbook NV5 with GeForce 3050Ti and after few hours of trying to get my second monitor to work I decided to ask you.
I have a fresh installation of Linux Mint 21
Monitor is an old DELL 23" 1920x1080 connected by HDMI -> DVI-D cable
SecureBoot seems to be disabled

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

Those are outputs from my terminal, as you can see my HDMI ports are disconnected and I can't figure out why?
Note: HDMI cable and port are working fine, I tested it when I installed win11 on this machine

If I can provide you any more info let me know.

I am having the same issue. In 20.3 2 monitors were working as extended screens off the primary laptop.

How can i get that configuration back in 21 Vanessa?

Welcome to the forum, kozborn.

Is there a reason you did not install the most recent Nvidia driver (version 510 or 515)?

What is the output of

Code: Select all

ls /sys/class/drm/
Please also supply the rest of the inxi info. We do not even know what desktop environment you are using.

I tried all of them, one guy from work said he had problem with 515, 510 being blacklisted and for him it works with 470

anyway, those are my outputs

Since there are some errors in the logs regarding the i915 intel driver, please use the liquorix ppa to upgrade your kernel to latest. Also, please check for a bios update.
so I've updated kernel to 5.18

Still, nothing works so far

Unless that one guy from work has the exact same laptop, I would not assume his advice is appropriate for your situation.

I just helped someone in this topic [SOLVED] No GreenWithEnvy and graphics applications after installing Nvidia driver 515 whose ran into an issue with the Nvidia drivers because they were using the 5.18 liquorix kernel. Reverting back to the 5.15 kernel fixed the issue for them.

There is a 5.17-oem kernel available. You can install the latest 5.17-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04
You will then need to boot into the grub menu to select that kernel to try it because Linux Mint automatically boots into the highest number installed kernel.

You can give that a try to see if it makes a difference. If not, we made need to "enable" the HDMI port to get it to cooperate. To do that, we will take a guess that card0-HDMI-A-1 is being used.

Please try adding the video=HDMI-A-1:e: kernel parameter to grub. You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it.

Let us know if you need more detailed instructions for adding it.

Still no change

I've already added

Code: Select all

video=HDMI-A-1:e:
into grub

inxi output also shows all external ports connected to Intel. That's different from many other laptops.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel Alder Lake-P Integrated Graphics vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK
driver: i915 v: kernel ports: active: eDP-1
empty: DP-1, DP-2, DP-3, DP-4, HDMI-A-1, HDMI-A-2
bus-ID: 00:02.0
chip-ID: 8086:4626 class-ID: 0300
Device-2: NVIDIA GA107M [GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Mobile] vendor: CLEVO/KAPOK
driver: nvidia v: 470.141.03 pcie: speed: 5 GT/s lanes: 8 bus-ID: 01:00.0
chip-ID: 10de:25a0 class-ID: 0302

The i915 driver and the display driver are loading so I do not know the impact of the call trace. However, sometimes OEM kernels have fixes in them that other kernels do not have.

Your Xorg log indicates the following kernel parameters are being used

Code: Select all

Kernel command line: audit=0 intel_pstate=disable hpet=disable rcupdate.rcu_expedited=1 BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-5.18.0-16.1-liquorix-amd64 root=UUID=f562d430-bee6-4c0b-a7a7-60260216d848 ro quiet splash
I'm not sure disabling those are a good idea for a 12th-gen Intel. Perhaps those were added with the liquorix kernel? Many people add that kernel for gaming performance so that might be what happened if you did not intentionally add them.

I think I found a bug report related to the error message and one of the comments indicates, "At the high level, it's a dual eDP issue. We don't have support for that yet in i915 driver. " so I do not think that is the issue here, especially since the driver is initialized after that call trace happens

Code: Select all

[ 3.658212] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20201103 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0

Does this laptop have any setting for graphics in the BIOS/UEFI?

Definatelly those parameters were not added by me

No, there is almost nothing in this BIOS (or there is some tricky way to get into more advanced version)

I presume you have switched back to Win11 and verified the cable is still good.

Let's try these two kernel parameters simultaneously. The first enables the port and the second one gives it an EDID for 1920x1080 (the resolution of your monitor). There is a space between the two when you add them (using the same guidelines I provided earlier).

Code: Select all

video=HDMI-A-1:e drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/1920x1080.bin
These parameters work for the open-source drivers such as Intel. They do not work for Nvidia, but given Intel is the connection for the monitor, I'm hoping they will work.

It doesn't boot at all, I'm getting bunch of errors, I'm sending attachement

It also happens with only fist parameter

Code: Select all

video
when I added it in

Code: Select all

/etc/default/grub
which is weird because it didn't happen when I added it temporary

I'm going to sleep, it's midnight here, will be back in few hours. Thank you for your time

That is not the first parameter. The first parameter is

Code: Select all

video=HDMI-A-1:e

Okay. Typos often cause errors which is why I mentioned it.

If you added the parameter to grub, let's check grub to see if maybe there is a typo somewhere.

Code: Select all

cat /etc/default/grub

Your grub looks fine.

I searched the errors in the photo you posted. I found some info for kernel 4.15 which indicated to add the video=SVIDEO-1:d kernel parameter to clear the flip_done timed out ones which are the first one and some of the later ones.

I found some of the others also mentioned with older kernels. It's like these issues are boomeranging. They went away and now they are returning to the Intel graphics driver. :(

Remove the parameters and see if you can get the system to boot.

Is there a brand name for your laptop? I tried searching on the info in inxi and did not come up with anything. Maybe knowing the brand will help unearth some helpful information.
