Re: Monitors don't turn off

Post by slano »

I guess you're right :)

I tried unplugging every device from the computer and only plugged in usb cable keyboard and both monitors connected, tried forcing sleep, same issue..

I checked the linux-firmware package on my 20.3 backup, the version I have there was linux-firmware 1.201.5, so I tried downgrading (21 has 20220329.git681281e4-0ubuntu3.3), no luck, same issue..

as for the dmesg errors, the only additional error I have there is

Code: Select all

mtd device must be supplied (device name is empty)
but that's most probably not related (as per discussion in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1981622)

and Failed to enable link training behavior is following:

:D if only one monitor is connected, and it is connected via HDMI, the issue is not present and nor is the line in the dmesg, great success

:? if one monitor is connected via HDMI and second via DP, the issue is present, and as soon as monitors wakes up from sleep, this pops into dmesg:

Code: Select all

i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* [ENCODER:111:DDI C/PHY C][DPRX] Failed to enable link training
:? if one (or both, doesn't matter) monitor is connected via DP and no monitor is on HDMI, the issue is present, and as soon as monitors wakes up from sleep, this pops into dmesg:

Code: Select all

i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* failed to enable link training
I think I'll stick with Vanessa with one monitor for a while and see how it goes, and again, thanks a ton!

I have 1.187.33, but I am using the 5.4 kernel.

Maybe there will be an update along the way which will help.

Both computers has American Megatrends but different version
Both computers has USB Logitech Unifying Receiver type: Keyboard,Mouse,HID

The common factor seems to be Logitech wireless.... Can it be that when the system should power down the screens that the Logitech wireless get some sleep signal, but ping back and wakes the system up again

Just a thought, as i don't have Mint myself.

Edit: 2 hours later.
I just saw when i read the thread again, that SMG posted on the other page: Quote Is there anything else in dmesg after the wakeup which might related to graphics or even usb ports? (You both have Logitech MX mice, but different versions.) end quote...
Sorry I missed that

I thought of that actually and already tried unplugging the wireless logitech receivers.
Intead I plugged in wired mouse / keyboard to test.
Didn't solve the problem sadly.

a lot of so called "green powersavings" can cause a lot of headache when it comes to wireless things.. not just linux it goes for windows too.
I don't want to intrude on the thread.. it was just a "outside of the box thinking" as sometimes it is another thing that cause things and not the thing that displays a problem.

Re: Monitors don't turn off

This issue is driving me nuts. But I finally found a root cause. It's muffin. More specifically, the display configuration, that was previously handled by csd-xrandr.

When I was running 20.3 I had issue where windows have been moved to only one monitor after monitors woke up from sleep. It was (and apparently still is) a bug (https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/9659), and there was a workaround in place: keep csd-xrandr running only for a couple of seconds to detect your monitors after you login, kill it afterwards. Problem solved.

So this issue was present also on 20.3 while having csd-xrandr running in the session. I also tried running openbox --replace in my current 21.0 installation, and the issue is not present while not running muffin/cinnamon.

Unfortunately, I have no clue how to get rid of xrand in muffin, since it's been moved from csd-xrandr into the muffin. Any ideas?

There was a major re-write of muffin code so it was closer to its Mutter base in LM21. You would have to look at the code and or talk with the developers as to how that is now being handled in LM21.

Same problem here, had it in 20.3 also and indeed there was a workaround for the xrandr issue, I posted it here viewtopic.php?p=2115502#p2115502. I also have a very similar setup, I hope it can be solved.
