Linux Mint 21 doesn't start after installing nvidia-driver-515.

Post by psarapkin »

Hi everyone.
There is a problem with NVidia Driver. The latest appropriate driver for NVidia is 470. After that version, after upgrading driver to version 510, the system doesn't start after rebooting. (The second problem is that, since the version of 470 there is no second monitor, the second monitor is only available on nouveau drivers).

And the booting process now stopped at these screenshots. And I even couldn't open the terminal via ctrl-F1(F2, ...)
After this, the only option is to reinstall OS.

If the latest appropriate driver for your GPU is the Nvidia-470, then why did you install the Nvidia-515?

Not all Nvidia drivers work with all Nvidia GPUs. You need to use the driver that Nvidia designed to work with your GPU.

If you have a Timeshift snapshot, then boot to a live session using your install usb/dvd and use Timeshift on it to revert to a snapshot that worked.

We need system information to be able to help you. Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

I seem to recall the last person who had graphics output similar to yours (Nvidia kernel driver showed as loaded, but the display drivers were not) had a blacklist on nvidia. We never did figure out why that had happened.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel CometLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630] vendor: Dell driver: i915 v: kernel ports:
active: HDMI-A-2 empty: DP-1,HDMI-A-1,HDMI-A-3 bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:9bc5
Device-2: NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile / Max-Q] vendor: Dell driver: nvidia
v: 470.141.03
pcie: speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:1f91
Device-3: Sunplus Innovation Integrated_Webcam_FHD type: USB driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 1-10:5

gpu: i915 display-ID: :0 screens: 1
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CML GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 22.0.5 direct render: Yes

I checked and your Nvidia GPU should be able to use the Nvidia-515 driver. Let's see some more data. What is the output of

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/gpu-manager.log
and

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
and please post the results of each of those within code tags.

Also I wanted to say that in driver manager 515 driver is recommended. And Also, I checked at the NVidia site drivers for my card - and there also latest recommended is 515.

For "prime-select query" the result is nvidia.

NVidia-prime-applet. If I got you right, you say about Nvidia Settings, so I have "NVidia (Performance mode)"

And next. The XServer logs is here

Look, to be clear, now I have 470 drivers that working, but, If I install the newest (and also, marked in Driver Manager dialog - "recommended") drivers from NVidia, then the system will not start after rebooting.

What criteria are you using to say the Nvidia-470 drivers are working?

Both the inxi output and the Xorg log indicate the Nvidia display driver and renderer are not loaded. That means Nvidia-470 is not working.

Only one drm device is added and that device is the Intel graphics even though both GPUs are being probed.

Code: Select all

[ 7.426] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card0)
[ 7.426] (II) Platform probe for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0
[ 7.435] (--) PCI:*(0@0:2:0) 8086:9bc5:1028:0986 rev 5, Mem @ 0xe2000000/16777216, 0xc0000000/268435456, I/O @ 0x00004000/64, BIOS @ 0x????????/131072
[ 7.435] (--) PCI: (1@0:0:0) 10de:1f91:1028:0986 rev 161, Mem @ 0xe3000000/16777216, 0xd0000000/268435456, 0xe0000000/33554432, I/O @ 0x00003000/128, BIOS @ 0x????????/524288
[ 7.467] (II) modeset(0): using drv /dev/dri/card0
I think the below may relate to why the Nvidia GPU is not working, but I'm not yet sure what the problem is.

Code: Select all

[ 7.453] xf86EnableIO: failed to enable I/O ports 0000-03ff (Operation not permitted)
I suggest you change to "On-Demand" mode and then reboot the computer and provide the output of inxi -Gx and the output of prime-select query.

Please also let us know if you did a fresh install of LM21 or if you upgraded in place from LM20.3 to LM21. I'm not sure why part of the driver is showing as loaded, but the driver is not being used.

That is the same as the previous output.

In addition to supplying the information roblm requested, please let us know if this was a fresh install of LM21 or you upgraded from LM20.3 to LM21.

We've had a few people post with issues with fresh installs and apparently Ubuntu 22.04 is handling dual graphics installs slightly differently than they did in the past. At this point I'm not sure if it is relevant to Linux Mint, but the more feedback we get the easier it is to help others.

Hello,

Unfortunately, I'm far away from my computer with problem (now I'm writing this from another laptop), so I can provide the output of the command in a few days later.

But now, I can say exactly, that there is now difference if it fresh install of linux mint 21, or if it was upgraded from 20.3 to 21, or even if it was on linux mint 20.3, cause I've tested all that cases :D.

Initially, I had linux mint 20.3. And at the update manager I installed latest updates, and I got latest updates for linux kernel and other updates, including video drivers. Also, I remember that something was shown to me with information about upgrading video drivers. I've upgraded that. And, I got the problem that my second monitor, that connected to my HDMI port is not working. The drivers was updated to 470 version. I thought that I should to install latest drivers - and in update manager I saw that now recommended NVidia 510. I installed them - and since that moment I've caught my first time when my computer failed to boot.

P.S. That was before linux mint 21 release.

So, I've reinstalled linux mint 20.3. And, I thought that there was some mistake, and I installed the latest (510) drivers. And my computer didn't boot again. And I got that this is a problem with driver. So, I stopped at the 470 version.

When Linux mint 21 was released, I"ve been thinking that what if that in new releases that problem fixed. So, I've upgraded from linux mint 20.3 to linux mint 21 via command line. And after upgrading, I tried to install the newest drivers - and I got the problem again.

Next, I tried fresh install - and the result is that latest nvidia driver is not working.

And now I have fresh install of linux mint 21.

Did you try reverting to a Timeshift snapshot of your system when it was working when the problem first happened? That would have been one way to verify if an update was the problem.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback and we will see what your data looks like when you are at the computer again.

Hi, I'm at computer now.
So, what about a snapshot in timeshit... That may sounds irresponsibly, but I don't have a snapshots)) And, also, you can see the problem at the first message of this topic, I added two camerashots of my monitor with the screen of the problem... And, when I see this screen - I cannot do anything, I cannot start second console by ctrl-f1(f2... and so on). The computer is not responding me after udpating to latest drivers.

So, the system output of the command is here - https://termbin.com/kp53

In that output are the following lines:

[Mon Aug 22 00:56:56 2022] [drm:nv_drm_probe_devices [nvidia_drm]] *ERROR* [nvidia-drm] [GPU ID 0x00000100] Failed to register device
That means the Nvidia-470 driver is not working on your computer.

Do you have a way of updating the BIOS/UEFI? The documentation I found indicates the latest available is version 1.16.0. Version 1.8.0 mentions " Improved the system stability." Perhaps an update might help.

The log shows Secure Boot is enabled, which will prevent the Nvidia driver from loading:

Code: Select all

[Mon Aug 22 00:56:54 2022] secureboot: Secure boot enabled
However, usually when that is true, then the Nvidia lines would not appear in the dmesg log.

You should disable Secure Boot in the BIOS/UEFI. Then post the output of inxi -Gx

So, the output of the command "inxi -Gx" without secure boot looks like the same

Code: Select all

Graphics:
  Device-1: Intel CometLake-S GT2 [UHD Graphics 630] vendor: Dell
    driver: i915 v: kernel bus-ID: 00:02.0
  Device-2: NVIDIA TU117M [GeForce GTX 1650 Mobile / Max-Q] vendor: Dell
    driver: nvidia v: 470.141.03 bus-ID: 01:00.0
Device-3: Sunplus Innovation Integrated_Webcam_FHD type: USB
    driver: uvcvideo bus-ID: 1-10:5
  Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.3 driver: X: loaded: modesetting

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CML GT2)
    v: 4.6 Mesa 22.0.5 direct render: Yes
So, we found out that my 470 driver is not working. So, what is the solution of this?
Should I downgrade the driver?

And also the question - why, even at the NVidia site, written that the recommended driver now is 515?

Are you dual-booting with Windows? If so, have you checked to make sure the Nvidia GPU is working in Windows?
