Since you got a 8th gen Intel CPU and you are still using 5.4 kernel, the first thing I would do is try the 5.15 kernel... Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels.

because I know a mod around here suggest using a newer kernel on 8th gen or newer Intel CPU's.

The HDMI cable is okay cause I used it on a windows laptop and it is working fine.
Comparing the use of the cable on a different laptop is not always a good comparison because you would be using a different port.

Try the newer kernel and if that does not work, with the TV attached to your Probook, please provide the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr
Here is the information to update the kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

Thank you very much. I just got a message for an update to 5.4 . Is that okay too?

As long as you have any 5.4 kernels installed, you will continue to receive updates for it. There is no problem with having more than one version on your computer. Linux Mint automatically boots to the highest installed version. If you want to boot to older versions, you need to do that through the grub menu.

I'm not sure I understand the question. If the question is will reverting to a Timeshift snapshot with an older kernel on it remove the newer kernel you just installed, then the answer is yes. Timeshift can undo kernel updates.

However, you can also boot to an older kernel by selecting it from the Advanced Options on the grub menu. (I can give you more specific details on doing that if you need them.) Either way will work. Kernel updates are one of the easier updates to undo.

Yes I asked about the timeshift cause I am new to Linux and just got the system working. Just don't want to mess up things just because I want to get HDMI going. I will try 5.15 as you suggested and see what happens. Thank you very much.
I have no grub menu appearing at startup at the moment. So I can't pick the kernel. Is there a simple way to activate the grub menu?

If one only has Linux Mint installed, the default is to not have the menu to show. You can either change the default so it always shows or you can just have it come up when you need it.

To have it come up when you need it, repeatedly tap the escape key during boot to bring up the grub menu for an UEFI boot computer (which yours is).

Some computers are very fast and timing the taps to get it to come up are not always easy. If you cannot get it to come up, see this post for how to edit grub to change the default so it shows. If you decide to edit grub and need more detailed instructions than what are in that post, just let us know.

Good morning SMG,
I tried with 5.15 but still no connection. Could it also be a driver problem? Do you perhaps have another suggestion?
Now that it is not working should I stay on 5.15 or move back to 5.4? If yes, how do I uninstall this kernel?
Have a good day!

This line from your inxi output is strange. The i915 should be modesetting:

Code: Select all

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: i915
Use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
Post the URL address that displays in the Terminal window.

There is no reason to change the kernel.

As roblm has pointed out, there is something odd about your install that it is showing i915 as the display driver (it should only show as the device driver which is on a different line in the inxi output) instead of modsetting. Perhaps you created a custom xorg.conf in an attempt to fix this issue? I'm not sure how else that display driver would load. However, provide the information he requests as that will help in troubleshooting the issue.

Edited to add: I see in this post the correct "modesetting" driver is showing so it appears you made a change which made the wrong driver load.

Thank you smg. No I didn't try anything yet to fix the problem. As a newbie I don't know what xorg.conf is about ;-)

The log shows the modesetting driver is loading. The inxi output may sometimes have an error.

There may be a compatibility issue with your laptop and Linux, so a workaround will be attempted.

What is the brand and model number of your TV, and what is the native resolution?

Thank you Rob. It is a SONY KDL 32W706B
Maybe the HDMI port itself is not functioning but I did not find away to test that.

Use this command to open the grub file: xed admin:///etc/default/grub

Change this line:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
To this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=HDMI-A-1:e drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/1920x1080.bin"

Update grub and reboot: sudo update-grub

Thank you very much. One step closer to the solution. It now shows the desktop background om the TV screen but nothing else.There a also many moving horizontal lines across the screen.

Also the screen of my email program won't show anymore and I get warnings on startup. I will reverse the grub line cause I need my email more then then HDMI

When I try and edit the grub menu it gives me this warning ** (xed:7384): WARNING **: 20:15:33.978: The location is not connected/mounted

Using the instructions from my previous post, change the line in the grub file to this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=HDMI-A-2:d video= HDMI-A-1:e drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-1:edid/1920x1080.bin"
If that doesn’t work, then test these lines:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=HDMI-A-2:e drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-2:edid/1920x1080.bin"

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=HDMI-A-1:d video=HDMI-A-2:e drm.edid_firmware=HDMI-A-2:edid/1920x1080.bin"

If you can’t open the grub file using the xed text editor, then open it with this command:
sudo nano -t /etc/default/grub

Use the Arrow keys to move the cursor. When done, press Ctrl+X to save and exit.

Thank you Rob, wonderful. I discovered the email program would not work because I seemed to be projected on another screen. So without the TV connected the laptop acted like there was a screen connected. That is after i tried out your settings.
I will give these lines a try.
