[Solved] New install, can only view 3840 x 2160 (too small to see)

Post by Chimerlock »

Hello

Can anyone help?

I just purchased an HP Envy 15, with an NVIDIA RTX 3060 6GB card. After installing Linux Mint VERSION="20.2 (Uma)" I can only see resolution 3840 x 2160 which is too small for me to read.

After booting, a message is displayed top right of screen
"Check you video drivers. Your system is currently running without video hardware acceleration. you may experience performance issue or high CPU"
It then presented link to Launch Driver Manager
IMG_20220812_151344.jpg
I loaded the driver "sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall" and rebooted. Message is still displayed

I removed the driver, rebooted, loaded the specific driver "sudo apt install nvidia-driver-470", rebooted, same issue

I tried googling the issue and found a few others with resolution but not with the same symptoms

One person said they fixed the issue by turning off secure boot (said it was preventing the driver to load). I tried that and rebooted, but still had same issue

NVIDIA says the resolution can be changed in their settings GUI under display settings. There is no display settings tab to select on my laptop

Others were asked to run commands and in include input. The xrandr has an error and shows only one resolution

Code: Select all

$ xrandr

Just tried adding the entries below to /etc/modules. Another thread here viewtopic.php?p=1895521#p1895521 suggested this would correct the Hardware acceleration message. Unfortunately it had no effect for me...

I suspect that is a dual-graphics laptop which means the drivers for both Nvidia and the onboard graphics (Intel or AMD) must be loaded for everything to work properly.

I do not see where you provided your system information. It's possible you may need to be using a different kernel or you need to change the GPU mode you are currently using. Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
Click </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply and then place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the code tags
Results
. This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware.

First, Thank you for your reply!

I can confirm that when running windows11 (keeping the laptop dual boot) both GPU are active

Also, I am not sure if it is relevant, but i noticed that windows uses 225% scaling for display. I thought i would try it in Linux but received an error when i applied the change (it switched it back to 1x from 2x with the error)

Here is the warning i get after signing on about the video hardware acceleration if it helps

How about you try the newer Mint 21? Mint 20.2 is using kernel 5.4 by default, which may not have best support for your newer 11th Gen Intel Core iGPU.

go back into cinnamon display settings and click on settings next to layout at the top. enable experimental fractional scaling. go back to layout and change user interface scale to normal. then an extra line will appear, set the fractional scaling at 125% and it should match windows then after you click apply. you will need to confirm that it works in a small dialogue that pops up or it will revert again.

you do also need a newer kernel, but also the nvidia proprietary 470 driver (ignore the recommendation for 515 because it's crap)
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

As has already been mentioned, your hardware is too new to be using the 5.4 kernel. There are no graphics drivers loaded. That is why you can not change the resolution.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:00:02.0
chip ID: 8086:9a60
Device-2: NVIDIA vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: N/A bus ID: 0000:01:00.0
chip ID: 10de:2520
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: fbdev
unloaded: modesetting,vesa resolution: 3840x2160~88Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

In order to be able to change the resolution, the graphic drivers for Intel must be loaded.
 • Open Update Manager.
 • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
 • Make sure 5.15 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
 • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
After you reboot, please provide the output of inxi -Gx and prime-select query. We will then check to see if you need to change the GPU mode to activate the Nvidia driver.

If you want, you can also start over and install LM21. LM21 is probably a better match for your newer hardware.

You are getting that because of the llvmpipe I highlighted in red in your output. When the drivers load, that message will clear.

OK, it is now fixed. The Mint 21 build I just installed (which was the reply consensus) displays perfectly!

A HUGE Thank you to everyone who responded!

I am a victim of my own laziness... I had reused a Mint 20 installation USB I previously installed on several machines in the house rather than check for the latest build.

Hopefully I'll know better next time :-)

Cheers!!!

Good to hear. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

dumb question... i no longer see an option to edit my first post. where is that pencil?

Also, I have a related but second challege regarding a 2nd monitor resolution not displaying at correct size. I assume I should open a new post...

No on has mentioned a disappearing pencil so I am not sure. Here is an animated gif of the process. (animated gif courtesy of user BJZilberman)

If that does not help you, please post a screenshot of what you are seeing.

Yes, please open a new topic and make sure to give the make, model, and normal resolution of the monitor along with your most recent inxi/system info.
