[Work-around] Screen does not dim all the way [Sort of solved]

Post by Sinnis250 »

Laptops screen brightness cannot go any lower than 5% in Linux Mint 21.

I've tried lowering the brightness with the F5 key but I still have a shadow background on my laptop screen at around 5% brightness even though it states that it has gone down to 0%

The Power Management tool gives the same result.

This worked OK on LM 20.3 but now, when I need less distraction when I am working with my external monitor, I have to close the laptop lid.

So its not a big inconvenience, only an irritation.

Has any one ran into this type of problem before and is there a fix?

🙂️

Thanks

Re: [Work-around] Screen does not dim all the way [Sort of solved]

Post by Sinnis250 »

I have a work around for the "blanking" or fully dimming my laptop screen without shutting the lid.

This is quite easily done.

Enter terminal command

Code: Select all

xrandr

to find which screen devices are attached to the laptop.

In my case, I have the laptops screen eDP-1 and monitor HDMI-2

Running the commands from terminal now allows me to do the following

Turn laptop screen off

Code: Select all

xrandr --output eDP-1 --off

Turn laptop screen on

Code: Select all

xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1080
Turn off monitor/external screen

Code: Select all

xrandr --output HDMI-2 --off
All assigned to Keyboard Bindings. Works a treat.

However your devices may differ.

This I suppose will have to suffice until something can be done about reducing the brightness control to an absolute zero in LM Power Management.
