[solved] is the GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 2 to old for mint 21

i have an older computer that worked perfectly with mint 19.3 but upgraded it to 21 yesterday. everything is working great except the driver manager isn't detecting the GeForce 8400 GS Rev. 2 graphic card on this version. is that card to old to install nvidia drivers on mint 21? i think it used driver version 340.xxx before.

main reason i ever installed that cheap card was simply to make it so windows wasn't sharing memory between things. if the card is to old to be detected by driver manager, does the default driver still not share memory between OS and gpu?

thanks for that link. figured card was to old. will use timeshift and just go back to 19.3 until end of life i guess, as i also ran into the issue of suspend not working in mint 21 also and i'm sure it's related to video card.

Yes, there is a known issue with the open-source nouveau driver not being able to resume from suspend.

Mint 20 does have the necessary driver for that card at the present time so that is another option to consider either now or when LM19.3 goes end of life. Mint 20 is supported until April 2025.

Make sure to run all updates and reboot before installing the proprietary driver. It seems to be more likely to install without problems when done in that order.

thanks for the info, but like an idiot, i installed driver before updating. no problems occurred though. 20.3 is now up and running with nvidia driver and suspend works!!
