HDMI not detecting TV

Post by chrispap000 »

Hello all,

I am new to Linux. I have just installed Mint, but it cannot detect TV with HDMI. Any help would be more than welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Chris.

Welcome to the forum, chrispap000.

Could you please describe what type of cable you are using to connect your TV to the laptop and provide the output of

Code: Select all

xrandr
and enclose the results in code tags.

The data you posted indicates the system is not picking up the fact your laptop has an HDMI port so some tweaks may be needed.

Hello SMG and thanx for the reply.

The cable is a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet.

The output of "xrandr" is:

Did you originally have Windows on this computer and you know for sure this combination with the same cable and TV worked?

What is the make and model of the TV and its preferred resolution?

Normally, I would suggest trying the proprietary Nvidia driver, but your GPU needs the Nvidia-340 which is not officially supported in LM21. (It is supported in LM20 versions.)

The documentation I found for the HP Elitebook 8730w indicates the following ports:
4 USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, eSATA, VGA, stereo microphone in, stereo headphone/line out, 1394a, power connector, RJ-
11/modem, RJ-45/ethernet, docking connector, secondary battery connector
so my guess is the DVI-D ports in the xrandr output are really HDMI (but I don't know why two are listed).

We can try "activating" the port to see if that helps. What is the output of

Code: Select all

ls /sys/class/drm/

Yes exactly. I used to have Windows and it worked.

It is a Samsung Model Code UE40H50000AW and resolution 1920 x 1080

The output is:

Code: Select all

card0 card0-DVI-D-2 card0-VGA-1 version
card0-DVI-D-1 card0-LVDS-1 renderD128

The preferred way to have this work is just to attach the TV and it is recognized as it should be, but that is not happening.

The next option is to "enable" the port with a kernel parameter. If that works you should see the TV and have options to change resolutions.

If that option does not work, the next option is to enable the port and tell it to use an EDID for 1920 x 1080. In that case, that will be the only resolution you can use.

In either case, you will be adding one or more kernel parameter to grub. You can use the following information How to add a kernel parameter to temporarily or permanently add the parameter. When you add it temporarily, it adds it only for that current boot cycle, so if, for any reason, it seems to cause issues or it does not work, all you need to do is reboot to clear it. If you need more details than that topic provides, just let us know.

Code: Select all

card0 card0-DVI-D-2 card0-VGA-1 version
card0-DVI-D-1 card0-LVDS-1 renderD128
In your case we know you are using the HDMI port, but, for some reason the system is recognizing it (as per the above) as DVI-D. Usually, when more than one port of that type shows, we can use the 1 port and it works. However, it's a test and see situation so I can not guarantee what will work in your situation.

The first option would be to add the video=DVI-D-1:e kernel parameter to enable the port.

If that does not work, the second option would be to add two kernel parameters with a space between the two of them which will enable the port and tell it to use 1920 x 1080.

Code: Select all

video=DVI-D-1:e drm.edid_firmware=DVI-D-1:edid/1920x1080.bin
If neither of those work, you could try each option with DVI-D-2 instead of DVI-D-1.

Let us know if you need more details or have questions.

Hello again and thank you for your time,

I added temporary parameters for all 4 cases you mentioned. Even if xrandr command showed that the port was enabled and an unknown display was shown in the display window, I still was not able to see anything on screen.

Any other suggestions?

Thank you again,
Chris.

Could you please give more details on what this means?

One would normally be checking the Display app to see whether the screen shows and what options (if any) are available in the drop-downs. xrandr usually indicates a port is connected and the resolutions available or it is disconnected. If you could give more details about what each option showed, perhaps we can figure out what is happening or what else to try.
