[SOLVED] External Monitors not showing up.

Post by daHaimi »

Hi forum,

this is my first post, though I have read a lot over the last few years.
I got an HP G2 Dock last week and wanted to start working with my Lenovo Yoga 720 15IKB.

To my surprise, it did not work at all, but I tried it last week with Ubuntu 22.04 on the HP ZBook G8 the previous week without a problem. So I guess there must be something in the LinuxMint configuration.

As I found this problem already being posted this year and this thread has not been solved yet, I think it is wise to bump it.
here is my inxi:

I also verified the thunderbolt is working, and USB and Ethernet work very fine. Just FYI, here is my boltctl:

I have both DP Ports Connected directly to HP Monitors with DP cables, so no HDMI conversion.

Multiple X restarts, system reboots, and switches of Intel/NVIDIA profiles later, I am still stuck.

I had it working with a Digitus Universal Docking Station USB Type-C before if that information is helpful. That dock has only one DP and one HDMI port, both used simultaneously.

It would be great if someone had an idea where to look next...

Welcome to the forum, daHaimi.

You have a different computer than the person in the other topic so your post has been made into a new topic. Hardware matters. You, in fact, have already proved that in your post.

This indicates when you attach your HP dock to an HP laptop it works. When you attach your HP dock to a Lenovo computer it does not work. The person in the other topic was attaching the HP dock to a Dell computer and it did not work. I do not know for sure if the HP dock will work with non-HP computers.

However, you also have a problem with your graphics drivers. It seemed you added the oibaf-ppa (which is known to cause problems for many people) and your system is now running in software rendering mode. Graphics through docks usually do not work in that mode.

direct render: Yes

I suggest you attempt to remove that PPA. It is not always easy to remove, but if you do not have a Timeshift snapshot of your system before you installed that PPA to which you can roll back, there are several suggestions for removing it in this topic Get rid of a system-wide, deep intervening PPA, without reinstalling OS. Some steps worked for some people and not for others so I can not give you a suggestion of what is best.

Your system needs to either have Nvidia or Intel as the renderer before you can begin troubleshooting whether or not this dock will work with your Lenovo.

Hi SMG,

thanks for your input...
I am really embarrassed right now. After trying with the YOGA for 2 hrs and then posting this, I started the ZBook again and also had no monitors recognized. After half an hour I realized that the DP plugs had not snapped when I connected them and slipped out during repositioning...

So to sum up: The monitors work like a charm with my setup now that I have overcome a huge derp moment

Thank you very much,

That is good, but if your system still has render: llvmpipe then there are problems with your setup.

Hi SMG,

so I've been away for a week, so I had not the time nor the possibility to follow up. Also, I did not think it would impact me in any way, but I removed it anyways with the LM Update Manager's Downgrade of third-party packages and deactivated the repo to make sure there were no additional dependencies.

After the next reboot, however, I found a "feelable" performance improvement in anything to be displayed.
Then I started Unity and - holy cow - 3D navigation is now really, really fluid, nothing to compare to before.

I installed the oibaf-ppa some time ago because the vulkan-renderer in the repos were not up-to-date, but the current ones seem to fully work.

Thank you very much for pointing this out.

Best,
daHaimi

Unity is a resource-intensive application so if there is a noticeable improvement there, then it sounds like your computer's renderer is properly loaded. You can check by running inxi -Gx.
