External monitor connected to console not shown

Post by HCE »

Hello all,

I have a similar problem as many other postings, but I don't know how to go about solving it. I have just started with Linux Mint Cinnamon, and almost everything is working, except my external monitor. I have a Dell USB 3.0 D3100 Display Link with various hardwares attached. Keyboard, mouse, internet, printer are all working, and of course my Dell Latitude pc connected to the Display Link. But not my Dell E2216H monitor. It doesn't show up in "Display", only the laptop screen. I have tried updating hardware, but nothing new is found.

Welcome to the forum, HCE.

Have you installed the DisplayLink drivers so the graphics through the dock work properly? I helped someone in the past with that same dock and the drivers are needed to get graphics with it. DisplayLink Ubuntu Driver Download.

The two drivers currently showing appear to be network and audio drivers.

Device-3: DisplayLink Dell D3100 Docking Station type: USB
driver: cdc_ncm,snd-usb-audio bus-ID: 4-2.3:5 chip-ID: 17e9:436e
class-ID: 0a00 serial: <filter>

I suggest taking a Timeshift snapshot before going through the installation process.

Under Graphics, it seems there is no driver for my Display Link:
"Device-3: DisplayLink Dell D3100 Docking Station type: USB driver: N/A
bus-ID: 4-2.1:3 chip-ID: 17e9:436e class-ID: fe01 serial: <filter>"
Everything else works fine through the Display Link Dell USB D3100. I bought a VGA-to-VGA cable and connected the monitor directly to the PC, keeping everything else through the dock. It worked. But I certainly want my dock to recognize my monitor.
So I will try your suggestion and reply back with what happened.
Thanks.

Sorry, but I can't get the install command from the install doc to work:
lqe@DELLMAX:~$ sudo ./displaylink-driver-5.6.1-59.184.run
[sudo] password for lqe:
sudo: ./displaylink-driver-5.6.1-59.184.run: command not found
lqe@DELLMAX:~$

When I run the command from the downloaded file area with terminal, I get:
lqe@DELLMAX:~/Downloads$ sudo ./displaylink-driver-5.6.1-59.184.run
[sudo] password for lqe:
sudo: ./displaylink-driver-5.6.1-59.184.run: command not found
lqe@DELLMAX:~/Downloads$

I'm still getting used to all the inxi output changes for LM21 and did not notice dock information is now also listed under graphics.

The part of inxi output I listed shows why you have drivers for the other functionality of the dock.

The install instructions indicate that should be the correct command to run on the extracted driver. :? Does the file have executable permissions?

I'm very sorry to have waited so long for a reply. I ended up buying some vga-to-vga connectors to bypass the console and hook up directly to our pc's, as I could not get anything else to work. Not an ideal solution, but I had to get started. I am new to Linux, and a monitor was absolutely necessary. If anyone has a solution, please let me know. Thanks for the help until now.

The solution is to install the DisplayLink drivers for the dock. You can ask questions on the DisplayLink: Linux and Open Source forum regarding getting the command to work.

Now the command is working, but it stalls after DKMS, as in attachment.

I tried it a second time, and it worked, I got DisplayLink installed finally. However, my main monitor was still not detected. And the boot took more than 2 minutes, with only Mint logo showing. After trying several times I gave up, uninstalled DisplayLink, reattached my PC to Monitor via cable, and now I'm back to square one. Some of the discussions in DisplayLink Forum are way out of my league, so I'll stay with my configuration for the time being. I still have everything detected through my Dell SuperSpeed USB 3.0 console, except for my Dell monitor. Thanks.

DisplayLink does periodically update the driver with bug fixes. Maybe a future version will work better for you or maybe someone else will have a similar issue and post the workaround on the DisplayLink forum. Both of those options have happened in the past and helped others.

The process of getting graphics has lots of different pieces because of the different technologies used in connections and cables (such as DVI or HDMI or DP) so it does get complicated.
