The new nvidia-driver-515.76-open

Post by Summerof69 »

Hi I just tried to install the new Open driver from Nvidia through driver manager in settings, but I wasn't able to reach a login for LM.

It is listed as recommended: nvidia-driver-515-open (515.76)

I had to use a Live image and Timeshift to get LM running again with the proprietary driver nvidia-driver-515 (515.76) back, and the system up and running again.

I normally just install the new driver and reboot, and it usually works.

The software:
Linux Mint Cinnamon 21
Kernel: 5.15.0-50
Nvidia driver 515.76

The hardware:
Intel core i7 3770
Intel Z77 Express chipset
16GB Kingston RAM
Nvidia RTX 2060 (12GB)

Result of inxi -Fxz

It would seem that there is general issues with the 515.76 driver. All though I'm able to run the propriety version.

Regarding the installation of the Open version:
https://www.reddit.com/r/pop_os/comment ... all_error/

The first comment says:
I got an error on Mint 21 when I tried to install the drivers also.
I never received any errors, I wasn't able to get a log in for LM.

I have the same problem here with LM 20.3. The original NVIDIA driver 515.16 is working fine. After changing to nvidia-driver-515-open the window manager isn't starting anymore. I had to go back to a backup image... :?

I'm relieved, but not glad, that I'm not the only one experiencing issues with the Open nvidia driver(s).

Always wanting the newest driver is a Windows thing. Due to a general lack of backwards comaptibility, it's not so desirable in Linux. Very common beginner mistake.

I was assuming that recommended meant, well recommended. :(

Avoid installing nvidia-driver-515.76-open. I tested it and it failed using either an HDMI or DisplayPort monitor connection. My graphics card is a GTX 1650.

The nvidia-driver-515.76 installed fine but users with a Nvidia RTX 30 series card should avoid it, although two users report success using a DisplayPort connection:

UPDATE: The nvidia-driver-515-open driver should install and work for GTX 16 and 20 series cards if you follow this step in the NVIDIA Driver README on this page. At least it did for me:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... _open.html

Before installing the driver, use this command to create a config file named nvidia-open-driver.conf (or whatever):
sudo touch /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-open-driver.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-open-driver.conf

Add this line:

Code: Select all

options nvidia NVreg_OpenRmEnableUnsupportedGpus=1
Update the initial ramdisk: sudo update-initramfs -u

Open Driver Manager and install nvidia-driver-515-open

This driver supports Nvidia graphics cards with the Turing architecture or newer, beginning with the GeForce GTX 1650.

I checked Driver Manager and saw the new open driver for 515 and got excited. Almost installed it on a whim! But during my reading I found this out:
In this open-source release, support for GeForce and Workstation GPUs is alpha-quality.
https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidi ... l-modules/

I have a 3060. Glad I didn't switch to open yet.

@robim: Thank you for your solution. :-)

Like "contained" is suggesting I may also want to sit this one over.

I think that it's a bit misguiding to call an Alpha driver "recommended".

I don't know if you read the whole article, but the Nvidia Driver README page in the link I posted also states that the first release of the driver with the open kernel modules should be considered alpha-quality due to some missing features, which are listed, but G-SYNC did work. I don't think most users will miss the other features except for Power Management. Suspend didn't work for me.

If everything is working fine, I usually never update the Nvidia driver on my two main Linux PCs and keep the original one I installed until I install a newer version of Mint. The same for the kernel.

@robim: I was merely referring to the driver-handling in LM settings, when I wrote that it was misleading to mark it as "recommended", because the open driver is marked as such. :)

I did read that it was an "Alpha" driver, that's why I made a Timeshift image prior to installing the Open driver.
I usually don't make manual Timeshift images...

The only thing about the nvidia-settings that really bothers me is, that I can't get .exe files to work with the Application profiles.

This new driver is the recommended one in the driver manager, but it doesn't work for me. It throws errors during boot then Linux Mint starts on a tiny resolution, but I switched to the non-open 515.76 and it works.
I have a GTX 1660.

Is there no way for LM to put the regular proprietary driver back as the recommended one? Having the broken alpha-quality open driver at the top of the list and recommended in the driver manager isn't good. I'm just thinking of users like OP that had their systems rendered unbootable because of this.

Linux Mint does not control that database. That information comes from Canonical (Ubuntu).
