Detect second monitor

Post by Osmario »

Hi

I installed a second monitor on linux 20.1 by connecting the two hdmi ports.
The second monitor only displays PC letters but is not detected in preferences/display
How can I fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Where are these two HDMI ports located? Does your desktop computer have two HDMI ports on it?

Please provide the output of xrandr and enclose the results in code tags as described in this topic How to use code display tags on forums.linuxmint.com.

The xrandr output is showing the screen on your all-in-one computer, but it is not showing any other ports.

I did a search and found this Inspiron 24-3459, dual monitor? which indicates:
The Inspiron 24 3459 doesn't have a video-OUT port which you need for a 2nd monitor. The HDMI port it has is only HDMI-IN which you'd use to connect a DVD player, xBox, etc to this PC.
So that would be why the monitor is not showing up.

That person does indicate a second monitor could be attached with a USB3 connection, but I don't see that possibility in the data you posted so I do not know if that would work.
