Installing AMD driver with new 6.0.0 kernel

Post by cowayger »

Hello,
I have Lenovo Yoga with AMD Radeon 680m & Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon, I needed to install kernel 6.0.0 rc6 because of touchpad not working & audio cracky on 5.15. However I cannot install amdgpu driver. (Mesa driver is freezing in Chrome).

There is a missing package required in amd installer:

linux-modules-extra-6.0.0-060000rc6-generic

I cannot find package in dev repo (https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/m ... 6.0/amd64/), neither google search found any mention of this package. What is this package for and where can I download it (or compile it)? Thank you.

Dump the unofficial kernel that you've installed and erase all its debris (including PPA source etc.). Then proceed like this:

(item 8.1)

Then take it from there. Does the problem still exist?

With this kernel sound is crappy, No mids, no bass, just hi frequency sound. Yet Vulkan is not crashing.

But amdgpu still wont install:
Following packages have unmet dependencies:
rocm-llvm : Depends on : python but wont install
Depends on : libstdc++-5-dev but wont install or
libstdc++-7-dev but wont install
Depends on : libgcc-5-dev but wont install or
libgcc-7-dev but wont install
Recommends: gcc-multilib wont install
Recommends: g++-multilib wont install
E: Cant fix, some packages are in corrupted state now.

The amdgpu driver (the one from AMD) is in the Linux kernel and loads automatically when you boot your system. Please explain what you are trying to install because the driver should already be installed.

Please also provide your system info. Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

I found the same thing when trying to install amdgpu on Mint 21 (I wanted the OpenCl driver that's not in the kernel).

It looks as though amdgpu for Ubuntu 22.04 installer is insisting on using obsolete versions of gcc and python that are no longer available on the target OS.
I must have misunderstood something - it can't possibly be that stupid, can it?

I'm not sure what is the current situation, but in the lower portion of this post are links to GitHub posts describing issues and workarounds related to using the packages on Ubuntu 22.04-based installs from research I did in late September. (ROCm includes the OpenCL parts.)

Thanks - those links look promising. It does seem like AMD have goofed on this one, releasing without testing on a clean 22.04 setup.

Here is my system report: https://termbin.com/ygkv

I have another issue, yet it is related to kernel version. Windows want to enter bitlocker key on every linux kernel update. It is really annoying. It had never happened on my previous laptop with bitlocker on.

This shows your graphics drivers are loaded.
Graphics:

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.3 driver: X: loaded: amdgpu,ati

OpenGL: renderer: AMD YELLOW_CARP (LLVM 13.0.1 DRM 3.48 6.0.0-1009-oem) v: 4.6 Mesa 22.0.5

Those are driver which come from the kernel. I see you have PPAs installed, but the PPA drivers do not work with OEM kernels.

Bitlocker is Windows technology. I'm not sure what that has to do with kernel updates. If you want help with that, I suggest making a new topic. Bitlocker is not related to graphics drivers.
