I have a defective video graphics card that is producing GPU temp of 92 C. Graphics card is a GEFORCE 9300GE 256MB DVI HDMI PCIE VIDEO CARD, part # HP 466851-001. The fan is not working, and so I installed another graphics card from a backup computer I have. It is a NVIDIA GeForce 6200 part # HP 5188-2888, and now after I installed it shows the GPU temp at 62. So I am pleased about that. But I need some guidance on how to install drivers through the Terminal.
I have run the DRIVER MANAGER after installing this second graphics card but am not sure the drivers for this card have been identified and installed because some of the font in my start menu is not readable when I hover my mouse over the various categories, which it was not doing before I installed this backup video graphics card. The DRIVER MANAGER says all drivers are up to date.
I have downloaded the drivers into my download folder. The file in my downloads folder shows the file as "wins11260943hp_5188-2888.exe" for this card. I do not know how to run this exe. file in LINUX.
I do not know how to install the download and would like to ask for some assistance installing these/this driver for this backup video graphics card through the TERMINAL. Can someone walk me through the process of doing so?
Thanks for any help on this.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.wildernesspath wrote: ⤴Sat Nov 26, 2022 11:05 pmI have run the DRIVER MANAGER after installing this second graphics card but am not sure the drivers for this card have been identified and installed because some of the font in my start menu is not readable when I hover my mouse over the various categories, which it was not doing before I installed this backup video graphics card. We need to determine what driver is currently installed.

We also do not recommend using the drivers from the Nvidia website.

Re: Install graphics card drivers in terminal
If the computer in which you changed the graphics card is the one in this post, that one is showing the correct graphics driver for your GeForce 6200. The GeForce 6200 can only use the open-source nouveau driver. There is no other supported driver available for it.
Please provide the information I requested so we can verify that is the computer for which you want help. Based on the data I see in that post, we will probably need more information from you to help you with reading the start menu.

Re: Install graphics card drivers in terminal
Yes, post system info as suggested. But if that is an Nvidia 6200, smg is right, the open source nouveau driver is the only one available for a card that old.
All I;d add is that the mint driver manager doesn't do anywhere near as much as new users seem to think it does. However, if there was a supported driver for that nvidia card it would have been in the list.

Re: INSTALL GRAPHICS CARD DRIVERS IN TERMINAL
Yes, that is the same computer. I had the issue with the random crash and reboot, and isolated the issue to the PSU, which I replaced from a backup computer. The backup computer is the one from which I removed the backup graphics card, that is now, apparently, conflicting with how the START MENU displays.SMG wrote: ⤴Sat Nov 26, 2022 11:43 pm If the computer in which you changed the graphics card is the one in this post, that one is showing the correct graphics driver for your GeForce 6200. Here on a new website I am initiating I have posted a screenshot of the START MENU ISSUES.
I did find the original graphics card on EBAY, used, and I am in the process of ordering it and installing it. However, for the time being, and in the interest of keeping the temp down on the graphics card, I am using the backup graphics card until the original arrives. I am thinking once I restore the original graphics card with a functioning one this will alleviate the temp issue as well as this current display issue.
Thank you.

All the graphics drivers are loaded and this is the only driver option available with this GPU on current versions of Linux-based distros.wildernesspath wrote: ⤴Sun Nov 27, 2022 11:20 amGraphics:

Two years ago I helped someone with a GPU of similar vintage as this one. They also had problems with the menu when using the nouveau driver. Because some older options were still available back then, they were able to jump through some complicated hoops to get the proprietary Nvidia driver working. The hoops are long gone.wildernesspath wrote: ⤴Sun Nov 27, 2022 11:23 amThe backup computer is the one from which I removed the backup graphics card, that is now, apparently, conflicting with how the START MENU displays.

Reviewing the topic, I see someone else tested the different Linux Mint versions and they did not have a problem with the Xfce menu when using nouveau. (They installed Linux Mint Xfce to run that test; they didn't just switch to a different menu.)
The original GPU is a newer generation one than the one you currently have installed. That means the hardware and the nouveau driver parts are different, so it would make sense there would be different results when using it.wildernesspath wrote: ⤴Sun Nov 27, 2022 11:23 amI did find the original graphics card on EBAY, used, and I am in the process of ordering it and installing it.

Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I have ordered the original card and will reinstall once it arrives.SMG wrote: ⤴Sun Nov 27, 2022 6:18 pm All the graphics drivers are loaded and this is the only driver option available with this GPU on current versions of Linux-based distros.
