(SOLVED) External monitor not working (laptop i7 12700h, hdmi connection through VGA converter)

Post by pxcandeias »

Dear all,

I am trying to connect my laptop running LM 21 (information about the hardware below) to an old HP vs19 LCD monitor. The monitor has only VGA input, so I am using a HDMI to VGA converter. I read the "Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working)" from this same topic (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=370633) but I am lost.

The HDMI to VGA converter works properly as I have used it with two other laptops (running W10 and W11) with no issues whatsoever, and I know that monitor is also working properly when I connect it through VGA, and also with the same HDMI to VGA converter, to another LM21 laptop (i7-4600u with integrated graphics).

I also tried connecting the i7-12700H laptop to a HDMI LENOVO L22e-20 monitor, at no avail.

The command "fwupdmgr get-upgrades" yields the following information:

Devices with no available firmware updates:
• MTFDKBA512TFH-1BC1AABHA
• System Firmware
• WD Blue SN570 1TB
Devices with the latest available firmware version:
• UEFI dbx
No updates available

I know that this particular laptop is currently running BIOS F.07 while apparently the latest and greatest is version F.10 Rev.A (https://support.hp.com/pt-pt/drivers/se ... 2101036122) but I have no way to update it in Linux as HP only supplies a .exe file.

Can you help me find a solution to this? I am currently running with the NVIDIA graphics card with "On-Demand" mode.

The data you posted does not seem to indicate you are running in On-Demand mode.

Did you install the Nvidia-520-open driver or the driver without "open" in its name? If you installed the "open" driver, please change to using the driver without "open" in its name and see if that fixes the issue.

If you do not know which driver you installed, you can either check Driver Manager or supply the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
Also, please provide the complete output of

Code: Select all

Dear SMG,

since my last post, I upgraded LM from 21 to 21.1 and I noticed that the mesa driver was upgraded too. After that I had the opportunity to test again the connection to the external monitor and it worked.

Nevertheless, I am posting below the requested outputs, may be they can help explain why it works now.

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia

No, the mesa driver was not upgraded with the switch from LM21 to LM21.1. Both outputs you posted are showing version 22.0.5.

However, it appears the Nvidia driver updated. You had the Nvidia-520-open driver installed for LM21 (which does not work properly) and your system was upgraded to the Nvidia-525 (not the open version) for LM21.1. I can see those packages in the output you posted.

The non-open version of the Nvidia driver works properly and that is why the external monitor is now working.

Here is your original display driver data (only Intel is loaded)

Code: Select all

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.3 driver: X: loaded: modesetting
and here is your current display driver data (both Intel and nvidia are loaded)

Here is your original Nvidia info (on top) and the latest below it. Notice the driver version changed.
