Random black screen with AMD 6600m

Post by Lu Bu »

So, I've replaced my GTX 660 Ti GC with a chinese JieShuo RX 6600M. Problem is that I'm getting erratic black screen when booting. To be more precise: BIOS hardware tests happen in a dark screen (most of the time - sometimes works) then I may see grub (it's a dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 20.3), it just follows the same screen state BIOS is giving. Black screen or not grub is there 'cause I can choose an OS (100% of time). When I choose Windows, card stops running noisy max speed, image appears on the screen, I can login normally, everything works like a charm from there. When I choose Linux, 3 different things can happen: 1- Black screen on login, I can't do anything so I reset the PC, 2- Login appears, but low res, if I do login driver manager comes up, I run it, it says nothing needs to be done, I'm stuck with shit graphics, 3- It works as intended, normal login screen, no driver manager message, I can detect and use the card just fine (I've installed radeon profile to do that in detail).

Pretty bad situation. Here's what I've tried so far:
0- Updated linux (kernel and stuff - didn't work)
1- Purge everything nvidia related (not sure how successfully - don't remember what I did in terminal)
2- Tried to install AMD drivers from their site, so I've downloaded "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 20.04.5 HWE", I've got the message saying same version was already installed, but I've reinstalled anyway. Then I did these:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo amdgpu-install
reboot
3- Tried to add Vulkan driver

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mesa-vulkan-drivers vulkan-utils vulkan-tools libassimp5 libvulkan1
sudo amdgpu-install --usecase=graphics,opencl --opencl=rocr,legacy --vulkan=amdvlk,pro
sudo reboot
4- Tried to change /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset", but then revert back.
Well, I'm out of ideas, I don't think the card is defective as it works when Windows loads 100% of the time, but the BIOS issue is pretty scary and been erratic makes it even scarier (why not just grub onward? why intermittent?).

I know someone'll ask so (but note that it was taken when linux did run fine - an exception):

Does this mean you just reboot the computer? If so, does it always work the second time?

That message coming up telling you to check your drivers means they did not load. There are no AMD graphics drivers in Driver Manager so there would not be any for you to find.

What do you mean you installed "radeon profile"? What software did you install?

The 6600M is a card for a laptop, but you have a desktop, correct?

Part of the issue may be the GPU is significantly newer than the rest of the computer. Normally, I would recommend just using the drivers from the kernel, but the 5.4 kernel is too old for that GPU so you needed to download the newer drivers from the AMD. However, I do not think there technically are drivers for that particular GPU on Linux-based distros. Maybe that is why the results are erratic.

Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|amdgpu\|06:00.0"
and let us know if this was an option #2 or #3.

You do not have an HWE kernel installed. You have the 5.4 kernel installed. The HWE kernel is the 5.15 kernel which can be installed using Update Manager.

Yes, I physically press reboot button. I don't understand what you mean by "work", I go through the same random process and might end up with a black screen again.

Yeah, it's the llvmpipe scenario (seems the rarest). Radeon Profile won't detect the motherboard.

radeon profile can be found here: https://github.com/marazmista/radeon-profile

Yes, a laptop gpu on a desktop, but that's not a problem per se. Kernel/Driver sounds more like the culprit, it's pretty bad to hear that there's no appropriate driver for it yet (will it ever?).

journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|amdgpu\|06:00.0" (run under a lucky star - linux working as intended)

You do not have an HWE kernel installed. You have the 5.4 kernel installed. The HWE kernel is the 5.15 kernel which can be installed using Update Manager.
So I should either try updating kernel/drivers or using older kernel? There's also a "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.04.01" option available on the site, still 5.15 I think, I dunno if would do any better. I'll install 5.15 and try it.

An update: Out of despair I tried to reset CMOS, now on defaults, but problems persists.

EDIT: I've installed kernel 5.15.0-56-generic and tried to re-run "sudo amdgpu-install" after "apt autoremove". I've noticed the following warning: "amdgpu dkms failed for running kernel". Also tried "apt install amdgpu-dkms libdrm-amdgpu-amdgpu1 libdrm-amdgpu1 libdrm2-amdgpu", issue persists.

EDIT-2: I've installed "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.04.01" and tried "sudo apt update" got:

Re: Random black screen with AMD 6600m

Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amI don't understand what you mean by "work", I go through the same random process and might end up with a black screen again.
I wanted to know whether just rebooting had the graphics drivers load or each time you rebooted you went through a process of not know whether they would load.
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amYes, a laptop gpu on a desktop, but that's not a problem per se.
One should have drivers which match their GPU. You installed drivers for a non-laptop GPU. I do not know the specifics of the hardware differences between the two to know if there might be any difference, driver-wise, for that type of situation. There may not.

Drivers are written so they work with specific hardware and a specific operating system. You can not just mix and match any driver with any GPU on any operating system and expect the driver to work.
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amKernel/Driver sounds more like the culprit, it's pretty bad to hear that there's no appropriate driver for it yet (will it ever?).
You would have to ask AMD that. AMD is the one who provides the drivers used in the Linux kernel. There are some GPUs for which AMD never provides Linux drivers; they only provide Windows drivers.
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amjournalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|amdgpu\|06:00.0" (run under a lucky star - linux working as intended)
The only problem I see is you apparently did not remove all the files you created/modified for Nvidia.

Code: Select all

Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amSo I should either try updating kernel/drivers or using older kernel?
No. You should use the drivers appropriate for your system instead of randomly installing (or attempting to install) everything you find.
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amEDIT: I've installed kernel 5.15.0-56-generic and tried to re-run "sudo amdgpu-install" after "apt autoremove". I've noticed the following warning: "amdgpu dkms failed for running kernel". Also tried "apt install amdgpu-dkms libdrm-amdgpu-amdgpu1 libdrm-amdgpu1 libdrm2-amdgpu", issue persists.
The AMD installation program is not a package. You can not run package commands on their program like you did. Additionally, I do not see where you uninstalled what you had previously installed before attempting to add more.
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amEDIT-2: I've installed "Radeon™ Software for Linux® installer version 22.20 for Ubuntu 22.04 and 22.04.01" and tried "sudo apt update" got:
You installed the drivers for Linux Mint 21 on your Linux Mint 20 install. AMD creates the different packages because the base installs are different.

And you did that on top of the problems you already had.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of your system before you decided to install everything AMD you could find?
Lu Bu wrote: Sun Dec 04, 2022 7:19 amNew run of journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|amdgpu\|06:00.0" after all the mess above:
Mess is exactly the word of which I was thinking to describe what you created.

I suggest you create an install usb/dvd of LM21 and boot to a live session and see what happens. (Do not attempt to install any drivers on it; just use the drivers from the kernel.) See if your system is stable and the graphics work. If so, I recommend backing up your personal data from your LM20.3 install and doing a fresh install of LM21.
