You may have correctly replaced the edid.bin file in /ib/firmware/edid but then did not update the initial ramdisk:
sudo update-initramfs -u
Re: Sapphire reference 7900 xtx UHD rez..but still limited to 60hz
Hi,
I saw you had a similar cursor issue, I also have an RDNA 3 card though missing an x
I tried your solution ctrl+alt+backspace, I tried to then use both the cinnamon and the software rendered.
I've tried multiple cursor themes
We don't seem to have Wayland option on LM
Nor can I find the file mentioned here: https://github.com/CatWithCode/catwithc ... 1364848537
I was wondering if you could share anymore details of what you did, have done or tried to resolve please?
Thanks

That file does not exist, but you can create one. I'll post the info in your topic.stefana92 wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 11, 2023 3:46 pm Hi,

This is all the time I can spend on this for now inside this particular topic. Not trying to piss off the forum mods in the context of incoherence since this topic is not about " no cursor visible" problems ( nods slowly )

Intel is the only one of those three which normally uses the modesetting driver.motoryzen wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 11, 2023 7:01 pmI had to create and put a manual file into etc/x11/xorg.conf.d folder calledno-modesetting.conf

I did not catch this in your earlier inxi outputs that is showed the modesetting driver.
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD driver: amdgpu v: kernel pcie: speed: 16 GT/s lanes: 16
ports: active: HDMI-A-1 empty: DP-1,DP-2,DP-3 bus-ID: 0e:00.0

Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.3 driver: X: loaded: modesetting
gpu: amdgpu display-ID: :0 screens: 1
That should be amdgpu and your file might be the reason it is not. If you look at the link provided by stefana92, you'll see the driver in the file is amdgpu.
Maybe using the amdgpu driver will help the Hz issue. I suggest you edit that file.

Re: Sapphire reference 7900 xtx UHD rez..but still limited to 60hz
1. Ok. so the 7900xtx is back in
2. Did the firmware update instructions SMG gave
3. Did the instructions roblm mentioned about custom edid.bin file ( tried both asus pq one..AND the ROG one)
results = rog one maxes out aa 60hz not even 80hz
Asus pq one = will show option of 98 hz but only will let stick 80 hz at UHD
And yes..I ran both commands below after precisely following roblm's instructions on that custom ROG edid file deal with the conversion from .txt to .bin
Here's an updated inxi as of two seconds ago
That resolved the " driver: X: Loaded: modesetting" issue , SMG involving your instructions to edit the 20-modsetting file I have in etc/x11/xorg.conf.d folder file called " 20-modesetting.conf content of that file below

Re: Sapphire reference 7900 xtx UHD rez..but still limited to 60hz
And here's an updated xrandr --verbose
updated inxi -Gx
Also just tried doing again the first firmware update SMG informed me off on page one of this topic, rebooted. only two 60hz options in Display settings
Then tried most upper firmware file option at which is linux-firmware-a1ad1d5b50626f2d126adf1964ce0e98cbb8b39d.tar.gz
Also tried the one at https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... it/commit/
When I mean " tried" i mean I download the file, extract it. in the folder that it shows after extraction. I go inside that folder, then right click , open in terminal, and paste the two commands that SMG mention ( one at a time of course and press enter to run them each time)
sudo cp -R * /lib/firmware/
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
then reboot the PC and check Display Settings again
This is what I do each time I try another firmware file/folder deal.

The default is to use the hardware cursor, so your change makes the software cursor be used. Why the hardware cursor would not work with this GPU? I did find mention a few months back of a change made in Mesa with regards to multi GL threading which affected KWin and some people made comments they thought it could be a factor with X Server, but I didn't find anything definitive as to why what you and stephan92 experienced would happen.motoryzen wrote: ⤴Wed Jan 11, 2023 8:16 pmThat resolved the " driver: X: Loaded: modesetting" issue , SMG involving your instructions to edit the 20-modsetting file I have in etc/x11/xorg.conf.d folder file called " 20-modesetting.conf content of that file below

You previously posted the EDID from a Windows installation using an HDMI connection, but I never told you to test it in the Mint installation because it was identical to the EDID obtained from running a live session from the Mint 21.1 USB. I think you should test that EDID in the actual installation. The live session output is not always exactly the same after the actual installation. Here is the Windows EDID:

It's my understanding the hardware cursor is the default used (if that file does not exist indicating to use software cursor).

I'm also curious if AMD expo in my UEFI bios must be disabled to finally fix my 60hz limitation problem as far as proper performance and all with my 7900xtx given the last paragraph of that phoronix involved link you gave the other 7900xrx user in this forum...a quote from the dev

Yes I realize I'm not running 7000 series vou, but ..* shrugs* may be worth a shot. I don't know pff my immediate memory if mine is enabled or if also PBO is involved either.. Launch day morning update: It looks like it may be related to the AMD EXPO mode with Zen 4... AMD is aware of some system configurations where the EXPO feature will set the BIOS SoC power out-of-spec that can lead to PCIe device issues. Forcing it to 1.25V for the SoC power via the BIOS is the workaround. With my ASUS configuration the SoC power was being set to 1.252V and some tentative tests at 1.250V for the SoC power are looking like the performance issues go away... Again, just an issue I've seen with the RX 7900 series and not other graphics cards but in any case will hopefully be better handled by a BIOS update.)

Hi, I have xg320u monitor and a 7900 xtx and I was also limited to 60hz with KDE and X11, but I am able to use 144 hz on 4K by switching to KDE wayland.
Hope this also helps you.

Wayland is not available for Linux Mint. Linux Mint runs on X Server only.
Perhaps AMD has been focusing their efforts on Wayland.

Re: Sapphire reference 7900 xtx UHD rez..but still limited to 60hz
Tried to install Ubuntu 22.04 vanilla into a separate ssd. Did..
sudo apt install linux-oem-22.04c -y
Kernel 6.1.something....resulted.
Still 1024x768 res with 75hz
Did the manual Asus pq 43 inch monitor edid.bin deal from earlier...got me UHD but same results...80hz and screen tearing central...uuug.
Tried to enable Wayland via instructions I found online, but the cog at the bottom right of hr login screen never showed up to let me pick a different display manager..
Uug. I really wish AMD wouldn't have advertised this as being supported in Linux given the entire pik tod this card is UHD rez at above 60hz...until the correct drivers was launched or at least put an asterisk on their official website on a detailed list of package and setup requirements..
But regardless..I'm the one that bought this sucker on launch month...

Did you add the newer firmware and use the PPA for the newer Mesa too?

Yes..I tried firmware only first....rebooted...multiple dp ports on the vid card and hdmi cable... I didn't see any newer mesa yesterday or day before

Newest mesa I have seen is just today via Update manager for me ( also New Mint update....update long with cinnamon, cinnamon-desktop, etc)
