Can`t get Dell G3 laptop to recognize external HDMI monitor

Post by AndreZoio »

Hello. I got a new laptop and I can`t make it work with my external monitor through HDMI. Tried the troubleshooting thread tips to no avail.
The external monitor has nothing wrong and checked connections, it works with my desktop and on windows.

Inxi output with external monitor attached:

What did you try in the troubleshooting thread tips?

One of the first things the tips mentions is to make sure the graphics drivers are loaded. Your laptop has dual-graphics, but only the driver for Intel is loaded. That is described as Intel-Powersave Mode in the Tips thread.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel CometLake-H GT2 [UHD Graphics] vendor: Dell driver: i915
v: kernel ports: active: eDP-1 empty: DP-1, DP-2, HDMI-A-1, HDMI-A-2
bus-ID: 00:02.0 chip-ID: 8086:9bc4 class-ID: 0300
Device-2: NVIDIA TU106M [GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile] vendor: Dell
driver: N/A pcie: speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 8 bus-ID: 01:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:1f15
class-ID: 0300

Did you install an Nvidia driver? If so, which one?

If you installed the Nvidia driver, then you should have an nvidia-prime-applet in your panel. (It probably currently looks like an Intel icon.) Please check that applet and let us know what mode it says your computer is currently using.

As mentioned in the Tips thread under Step 2:
If you have a dual-graphics laptop that has an Nvidia driver version higher than 435, try switching to On-Demand mode. Some laptops have one GPU driving the laptop display and another driving the external ports. That situation requires drivers for both GPUs to be loaded.
Maybe I need to mention that in Step 1 as well. Or move it earlier in the Step 2 listing.

I am using the recommended driver, nvidia-driver-525. I set the applet to on demand, and inxi still gives driver: N/A. Tried reinstalling the driver, didn`t work.

Installing the driver and the driver loading at boot time are two different steps.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
If it is enabled, then you have to create MOK/password to give permission for the Nvidia driver to be able to load at boot time. Or you can go to your computer's BIOS/UEFI and disable secure boot and the driver will load without having to create MOK.

It seems secureboot is disabled.

Code: Select all

andre@andre-G3-3500:~$ mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled
I`ve also been trying to uninstall and reinstall the nvidia-driver-525 and it gives an error, both on the driver manager and terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-525

The issue is the 5.19 kernel was compiled using a different version of gcc than what comes with LM21. I don't know why they did that.

You can either switch back to the 5.15 kernel and the driver will install without errors.

Or you can install the gcc-12 package and try again with the 5.19 kernel. Some people have had to install more than just a newer gcc version, but that is all most have needed to do. [SOLVED] Nvidia driver failure on Vera because of gcc-11 on updated kernel 5.19.0-28-generic

Installed GCC 12 and now everything works, including the HDMI.
Thanks
