Only nouveau has 'open' somewhere in the description. I changed to Nvidia-470 but the problem is still here. Then I did the modification on xorg.conf and, indeed, after a new login the higher resolutions are here, including some higher ones but of course that is not a problem. So, it works! The monitor is still not recognised but at least I have the correct resolution. Suspending works too.
There is still one issue, but I can definitively live with that. The issue is that my speakers are usually on the screen rather than being on the computer, so that when I connect another device to the screen — like a gaming console — it benefits from the speakers. With the monitor not recognised, its speakers are missing from the audio configuration in Linux so I'll have to plug the speakers directly on the computer, and change that setup when another device uses the monitor. It's not often so, again, I can live with that, until my next upgrade of Linux Mint which will probably fix the issue. It is still annoying that I don't know why the monitor was suddenly not recognised anymore.
So, as far as I am concerned we can stop here, I'm satisfied and ready to set the issue as solved/bypassed. However, if it is bugging you and you want to try more things, I'll keep following your suggestions.

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
I'm still puzzled as to why the EDID obtained from the nouveau driver didn't work, because the log shows the Nvidia driver is reading the EDID file:
I just tested that method in Mint 21 and it still worked (xrandr --verbose lists the EDID). If you upgraded from Mint 19 to 20, instead of doing a new Mint 20 installation, then that could be related to the problem, so a new installation may help.
I then planned on creating a basic custom EDID to use but when I tested that, it didn't work as it has in the past. The Nvidia developers must have made some changes in the newer drivers to not allow that.
My only other suggestion is if you have another PC with Linux or Windows installed and Nvidia graphics and then connect the monitor to it.
Code: Select all
[ 7.511] (**) NVIDIA(0): Option "CustomEDID" "HDMI-0:/home/mika/edid.bin"

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
Usually I prefer to start fresh, so I probably installed a new Linux Mint 20 version instead of upgrading from 19.
I do have a laptop on Linux Mint 21.1 Vera. After connecting the monitor, here is the
And, more importantly, the
The EDID looks similar to the one found when connecting the monitor to my main computer.
[edit] Oops, but that computer isn't using a Nvidia graphic card.

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
If you want to do some further testing, then download this edid-edited.zip file, which is the EDID from the nouveau driver which I edited to hopefully work with the Nvidia driver:
Extract the edid-edited.bin file and add it to Home. Remove or rename the existing xorg.conf file and use this one:

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
I tried it with Nvidia-470 and Nvidia-525 but it didn't work. I made sure that xorg.conf was properly edited, with the correct path and file name for edid-edited.bin. Under Display the monitor isn't recognised and thus higher resolutions are missing.

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
Oops! From the log:
This line in the xorg.conf file:
Should have been this:

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
Oh, I should have seen that when I checked…
In any case, bravo! It works. Display thinks it is a LG Electronics but it has the correct high resolution and its speakers are detected too. So, you took that EDID from a different monitor with similar characteristics? That would mean that my monitor somehow has, maybe, a non-standard EDID that is hardly accepted?
I am very grateful, many thanks to you!

Re: HDMI monitor not recognised
That's because I used Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) in a Windows PC to edit the EDID obtained from the nouveau driver and there is a 19 inch LG monitor connected to it. So the edited EDID will list that monitor name and size, which the Display program in Mint will also list, but this incorrect info has no effect on the execution of the EDID. To change this to the actual monitor name and size, you could install CRU on a Windows PC with the Viewsonic monitor connected, open the app, import the edid-edited.bin file and export it.Klok wrote: Display thinks it is a LG Electronics but it has the correct high resolution and its speakers are detected too. This is the 1920x1080 mode from the original EDID:
Code: Select all
Pixel clock Horizontal timings Vertical timings HorizSync
1920x1080 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 67.50
I replaced it with a reduced blanking mode, which uses lower frequencies and horizontal and vertical timing values, which work better with many newer LCD monitors and is mandatory for high resolution / high refresh rate monitors.
Code: Select all
1920x1080 138.50 1920 1968 2000 2080 1080 1083 1087 1111 66.58
If not, what other resolutions would you possibly have the need for. I can add them to the EDID.
Also, did you test if the edited EDID works correctly after a reboot?
Re: [SOLVED] HDMI monitor not recognised
I understand and, no, I don't need other resolutions, it's perfect like this. Yes, I rebooted and the EDID is still doing its magic.
