[SOLVED] HDMI monitor not recognised

Hello,

I used to have a problem when booting: my HDMI monitor was not always correctly recognised, and generic settings — resolution limited to 1600×900 and no speakers — were used. That was around versions 17 or so of Linux Mint. I had to reboot several times to finally have a proper resolution. That issue disappeared around version 19 or 20 (I am currently on Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon), until now.

I made the “big” mistake of waking up the computer before switching on the screen, and since then, no matter how many times I restart, plug and unplug the monitor, the specifications are never found again. Just to be clear: there were no software or hardware changes, it is only by switching on in a different order that the setup was broken. Just in case, I updated the latest NVidia drivers and restored a one-day-old Timeshift snapshot, to no avail. I know, it's more superstition than logic, but I wanted to try everything before bothering you guys. :) I did not find a solution by browsing the different subjects here. In the display setting, the resolution is limited to 1600×900, and 1024×768 is recommended… The monitor is marked as Unknown HDMI-0, I don't remember if the exact name (iiyama Prolite GE2488HS) used to appear here. In the sound settings, the screen's speakers are also missing, they used to appear as a HDMI device.

Of course I would like to fix the issue but also to understand why the order matters, and how to make it not matter.

[edit] More precisions just in case: it is the sole monitor, not a second one, and the HDMI is plugged directly to the computer, without an HDMI switch or anything between them.

The monitor's EDID is not listed, which the graphics driver reads to get the monitor's supported capabilities. Otherwise, sub-optimal settings are used.

Did you try using other Nvidia drivers?

Or does the monitor work correctly when using the open-source nouveau driver or if connected to another Linux PC? If yes, then get the output of xrandr --verbose from it.

I was on the 515 NVidia driver and switched to 525 before opening this subject, I didn't try other versions of this driver. Following your suggestion, I switched to nouveau, restarted and… now I have the proper resolution! The device also appears in the audio settings. Is nouveau as performant (or close enough) as the NVidia drivers? If it is, I will gladly keep it as my driver.

The nouveau driver won't utilize the full performance capability of the Nvidia GPU. However, it is adequate for many Linux users. Other activities, such as gaming, may require more graphics processing power. You would have to test that driver to determine what your needs are.

If you want to use the Nvidia driver, then the EDID obtained from the nouveau driver will be added to a config file for the Nvidia driver to read.

Thanks a lot Robim. The custom EDID did not work for some reason, but the process you described is pretty self-explanatory (still, I am amazed that you know such tricks!) and I'll investigate and try to make it work. Meanwhile, I'll stay with the nouveau driver, as long as it is okay when gaming (which I do).

No, it is not listed, and the monitor is an anonymous HDMI-0 device again.

Switching back to nouveau and looking at Display, I saw the monitor as ViewSonic Corporation 23" HDMI-1. HDMI-1 instead of 0, I don't know if is just to hide the zero-based logic or actually a wrong number so I tried Option "CustomEDID" "HDMI-1:/home/[...]/edid.bin" in xorg.conf but it still doesn't work. After that I also tried with Device1 instead of Device0, just in case: still not recognised.

No, HDMI-1 can't be used with the Nvidia driver. You have to use the name listed in the xrandr output. The name of the video connector will change depending on which driver is used.

Post the output of xrandr --verbose

Use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log to terminal.com pastebin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

Post the URL address that displays in the Terminal window.

Did you use the xed text editor to save the EDID lines or LibreOffice or some other app?

What is the size of the edid.bin file?

Yes, I used xed and copied the EDID's 256 bytes: 16 lines and no extra carriage return. It is saved as locale-utf8 which should not matter for characters under 128, and Unix/Linux line endings. The edid.bin file is 256 bytes long and seems to correspond (checking the first and last lines):

That's the correct size.

The xrandr --verbose output doesn't list an EDID. Open the xorg.conf file and try changing HDMI-0 to DFP-3, which is the name in the X.org.0.log.

It's still the same with DFP-3, the device is anonymous in Display and higher resolutions are not available.

The new xrandr --verbose, just in case you need it. There is no mention of DFP in it, only HDMI.

I assume the edid.bin file is still located in your Home directory (/home/mika) and wasn't moved to another location?

Post the xorg.conf file: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Yes, I didn't move the edid.bin file so far, maybe later when it works. Here is the xorg.conf as it is now:

The only warning lines of significance in the log are:

But the data I extracted from the EDID does list a maximum image size.


Change DFP-3 back to HDMI-0

The problem may be with the Nvidia-525 driver. I suggest switching to the Nvidia-515 driver.

Unfortunately, I have to get off the Internet for today, and I'll return tomorrow morning.

HDMI-0 and Nvidia-515 did not solve the issue. For now, I'm returning back to nouveau as it gives me the nice resolution again. Thanks again for your help, I'm learning a lot. :)

[edit] nouveau is not the fallback solution I expected, as it creates a new issue: the computer will not suspend, now. It does with NVidia. This is another problem entirely, I saw previous issues about that.

Check in Driver Manager that none of the drivers have the word "open" in the name.

Would you try installing the Nvidia-470 driver.

If that fails, then open the xorg.conf file, remove all the lines and add these:
