LM freezes when playing videos with VLC or Celluloid

Post by Stabibelot »

Hi everybody,

When I launch a video with Celluloid or VLC, after few seconds, the computer freezes completely and I must restart it.

I've already opened a thread 8 month ago about this problem, but I couldn't resolve it.

I've just re-installed Linux Mint 19.3, remembering that I had not such issue on it, and I confirm I have no freeze using this version.

Here is my system report :

There are a number of differences between Ubuntu 22.04 (on which LM21 is based) and Ubuntu 22.10. One difference is the kernel. You have the option in Update Manager of LM21 to upgrade to the same 5.19 kernel which is in Ubuntu 22.10.

Instructions for upgrading to the 5.19 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 5.19 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.

on a side note... you can get a rather decent CPU upgrade (2 core to 4 core) for next to no money. you have a CPU very similar to what I had. I went from a i3-2120 to a i5-3550 in the year 2020 for only $20 used and I use the same heatsink/fan from my i3-2120 and just undervolted the CPU (by -0.120v) through BIOS to lower heat (I also have a ASUS board) and cleaned off the used CPU and applied some old Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste I had since March 2006. that's a pretty good upgrade for minimal money as anything that takes advantage of more cores would see a solid performance increase. I just thought I would mention it. I was considering the i7's at the time but they were a lot more money (I want to say roughly $60-70) so it made no sense to use those over the i5 since the i5 gets you a high percentage of the performance gain anyways over i3 so it made no sense to get a i7 given the price difference.
MainPC: i5-3550 (undervolted by -0.120v (CPU runs 12c cooler) /w stock i3-2120 hs/fan) | 1050 Ti 4GB | 16GB (2x 8GB) DDR3 1600Mhz RAM | Backups: AMD E-300 CPU (8GB RAM) / Athlon X2 3600+ CPU (@2.3GHz@1.35v) (4GB RAM) | All /w Mint 21.x-Xfce

Yes I'll probably put money in a hardware upgrade sooner or later. But until that, I want to understand what happens
