Intel Haswell Forced Shutdowns

Post by stuart264 »

I'm running Linux Mint 21.1 Vera on my older laptop an HP Notebook 15-AC005NA which reports back as having an Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics driver: i915 v: kernel

I keep getting a recurrent problem with forced power off's when the graphics card is under heavy load and connected to the monitor on HDMI. I don't believe it's a hardware issue as it doesn't do it when I boot the same machine and hardware into Windows 10 x64. But because it is an immediate power off nothing gets written to the logs

I know there was a historical issue with that chipset but I thought it had been resolved. I have seen various suggestions that seem to imply either setting or unsettling the modesetting value or adding in the LTS Enablement Stacks but my tech level means I'm simultaneously unsure which change to make and too experienced to start blindly experimenting so hopefully someone can advise.

TIA
Stuart.

Steps I have taken so far:-

No thermal issues are known, cooling fan for the heatsink was replaced 2 months ago with a brand new one, and the laptop when I am using it on the monitor sits on a laptop stand with 4 cooling fans moving air.

you ay not have any hardware thermal issues but inxi reports a cpu temp of 59 degC. That seems a bit high.

FWIW, my main Linux box (whcih I'm not typing this on) is an HP Probook with the same gpu running Debian Stable based MX 21 KDE. While I've seen a number of issues with this card in Mint 20 and 21, mine worked flawlessly OOTB and still does.

The thermal range for the fitted Intel i3 Processor usually runs between 50-60C which I why I keep the fan set to always on in the bios and have a fan-cooled stand to put it on. I get the same temps reported by SpeedFan when I boot into Windows.

I am leaning towards this being hardware related, I suspect a thermal sensor is either misreading when I booted this machine into Windows and installed Speedfan I got the impossible value of 429496448 Centigrade on one of the sensors. A friend is going to drop around his spare KLIM Cool Air Vacuum later so I'm going to try more airflow and see if that value alters as it may just be dust or fluff somewhere causing that false value, Failing that I can e-mail HP and see if I can get the tech manual for the motherboard and possibly replace the sensor as it looks like its the firmware causing the shutdown and not the O/S.

Just so this stays in an archive for anyone else having the same issue. The KLIM Cool laptop blower is an excellent product, totally recommend it for laptops and have actually bought one (£12.97 from Amazon UK) based on the temperature drop on my laptop.https://www.amazon.co.uk/%E2%AD%90%EF%B ... th=1&psc=1 (Not spam it's genuinely a good product)

Didn't fix the issue though did improve it, as I'm still having thermal-related shutdowns and have exchanged e-mails with HP Technical Support and looked at the documentation they sent me it's a thermal sensor that is probably either on its way out or dry jointed. Given it's a motherboard with an older non-socketed processor, it's beyond realistic repair I'm going to order a new one over the weekend.
